Detroit Tigers 3 St. Louis Cardinals 1
Rick Gagliano | 10/22/06
Detroit's Kenny Rogers continued his dominance in the post-season, blanking the St. Louis Cardinals for 8 near-perfect innings and evening the series at 1-1 with a 3-1 win for Detroit.
Rogers extended his post-season scoreless streak to 23 innings, allowing just two hits - to Scott Rolen in the 2nd inning and Yadier Molina in the 8th - and 3 walks. Not a single St. Louis runner reached 2nd base against Rogers.
Jeff Weaver, the Cardinals' starter, took the loss, allowing 3 runs on 9 hits over 5 innings. Weaver, though he did a credible job despite finding trouble in every frame, was no match for the indomitable Rogers.
Just like in Game 1, Craig Monroe got things started for the Tigers with a one-out solo blast to right on the first pitch from Jeff Weaver. Ordonez picked up his first hit of the series with a little blooper over David Eckstein with two outs. Carlos Guillen followed with a gapper to left center. Ordonez scampered all the way home from first for an early 2-0 lead.
While Kenny Rogers was cruising along on a one-hitter, Cardinals' starter Jeff Weaver struggled, allowing baserunners in each of the first three innings, giving up 6 hits and a walk, though the Tigers only struck for the 2 runs in the first.
In the bottom of the 4th, Weaver ran into more trouble, hitting leadoff hitter with a pitch, then giving up a scratch single to Brandon Inge. Ramon Santiago bunted, but Pujols misplayed the ball, loading the bases.
Weaver struck out Granderson for the first out and induced a pop-out from Craig Monroe. Polanco grounded to short to end the inning, allowing Weaver to escape the biggest jam of the series.
Weaver allowed another Tiger score when Carlos Guillen tripled with one out in the 5th. Sean Casey delivered one out later and the Tigers led, 3-0. Weaver finished the inning and did not return.
St. Louis finally got their second hit of the game when Yadier Molina reached to lead off the 8th, but Rogers quickly finished the inning with by getting the next two batters to ground into a fielder's choice and a double play.
Todd Jones worked an eventful ninth which nearly changed everything. With two outs, Scott Rolen flared a single to right. Encarnacion reached on an error by Jones. Edmonds stroked a double down the left field line, scoring Rolen. Preston Wilson was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Yadier Molina grounded to short to end the game.
Though he could not have been satisfied with the result of game one, Tigers' manager Jim Leyland made no changes to his lineup whatsoever.
Tony La Russa, on the other hand, whose team won the opener, made a number of adjustments. While continuing to use the DH in the #2 hole, he inserted Scott Spezio, replacing Chris Duncan. La Russa changed the 4-5-6 spots in the lineup, but not the players. In game 1, it was Edmonds, Rolen, Encarnacion. Game 2 had those three spots in the order of Rolen, Encarnacion, Edmonds.
In the bottom of the lineup, a kind of double switch. In game 1, Ronnie Belliard played 2nd and batted 7th; So Taguchi played left field and batted 9th. For game 2, La Russa had Aaron Miles playing second and batting 9th, while Preston Wilson played left and batted 7th.
Carlos Guillen was on base 4 times, with a single, double, triple and a walk. Conversely, Ivan Rodriguez, batting right behind him is mired in an 0-19 post-season streak and is 0-8 through the first two games of the World Series.
The series shifts to St. Louis on Tuesday, with Chris Carpenter facing the Tigers' Nate Robertson. The Cardinals and Tigers are guaranteed all three games at the new Busch Stadium. If it goes beyond game 5, the 6th and 7th would be played in Detroit.
Both leadoff batters are hitless in the series. David Eckstein and Detroit's Curtis Granderson are both 0-9 through two games.
