Week 9 notes

Who's really Number One?

Boston College's stunning triumph over Virginia Tech on Thursday night started an eventful weekend for the top 25. While BC struggled most of the game against the Hokies, they showed the kind of resolve to get the job done and remain atop the Downtown Magazine exclusive rankings.

Ohio State is the choice of the major polling organizations and they certainly looked good hammering Penn State in Happy Valley. However, comparing the quality of opponents, the Hokies were, and are, clearly superior to the Nittany Lions. Ohio State was supposed to win, and they did. Boston College was a 4-point underdog according to Las Vegas experts and they upset the applecart.

That leaves spots 8-10 to a handful of teams, any of which could finish the season in the #1 spot, with the notable exclusion of Hawaii, though, as Boise State proved last year with their stunning win over Oklahoma, these lesser teams from smaller conferences, can now play with any team in the nation.

Oklahoma and LSU, in the 3 and 4 spots, respectively, each have one loss by a narrow margin, but both of them have to survive not only the remainder of the season without a loss, but a conference championship game as well.

The two entrants from the PAC-10, undefeated Arizona State and one-loss Oregon, have only to win the remainder of their games, but that's not a possibility for one of them, as the two square off this Saturday (Nov. 3) at Oregon. The Top 10 will be shuffled once again.

That leaves West Virginia, Missouri - each with one loss - and unbeaten Kansas as the only plausible contenders for a BCS title game. Missouri's already lost to Oklahoma and Kansas will have to get by Missouri in the final game of the regular season on November 24, and then face Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game.

West Virginia may have the most likely route to the BCS championship game. The Mountaineers play Louisville this Thursday night, then travel to Cincinnati on November 17, in what should be a real test. They finish with a pair of home games against upstart UConn on Nov. 24 and Pitt on December 1. Should they win those four remaining games, their only blemish would be a 21-13 loss at South Florida, since the Big East does not have a championship game.

The way this season has unfolded, it's very likely that at least one of the participants in the BCS championship game will have one loss. There's a high likelihood that both teams will have one loss, which would certainly leave college football fans screaming at the top of their lungs for a playoff platform because there will be at least 6 or 7 teams with one loss before the bowls begin.

So, who really is number one this season? In reality, we may never know.
