Kansas Deserves #1 Ranking
All season long, the polls have underestimated the program at Kansas. When they were 5-0, most "experts" thought Kansas State would end their winning streak. The result was a 30-24 win by the Jayhawks. Two consecutive road wins - at Colorado and Texas A&M - garnered some attention, but Kansas remained ranked well behind the likes of LSU, Ohio State, Boston College and Oklahoma (a conference rival with a loss) and others.
As the season wore on into November, the number of teams without a blemish on their record continued to fall, until last week, after Illinois knocked off Ohio State in Columbus, that number fell to two - Kansas and Hawaii. Since Kansas is a participating member of the Big 12 conference, they should receive the same respect other teams in the conference do, though it surely seems as though they do not.
For instance, Texas was ranked well even though they were struggling early this season. Oklahoma continued to rank in the Top 10 even after their loss at Colorado. After Kansas beat Colorado at Boulder, the Sooners were still ranked ahead of the Jayhawks.
It's time for some level of fairness in college football polling. Kansas is 10-0 and the only major conference team without a loss. They deserve the #1 ranking as much as any other team with the same record would. Putting Oklahoma, Oregon and LSU ahead of the Jayhawks is a slap in the face.
According to the BCS as currently composed, the national championship game would be played between LSU and Oregon. Each team has a loss on their record. Somehow, with an undefeated team from a major conference - Kansas - out of the mix, that seems wrong.
