Week 13 notes

So What's New? #1, #2 Lose

College football fans must have expected Thanksgiving weekend's results. Not a week has gone by in this wild season without some number of Top Ten teams going down in flames.

But, really, while Missouri's win over Kansas wasn't that much of a surprise, who expected Arkansas to upend LSU? Everybody? Nobody?

To further muddy the waters, the BCS has now put Missouri on top, with the Mountaineers of West Virginia nipping at the Mizzou's heels. The big fear is that Missouri loses to Oklahoma in the Big 12 championship game and the college football world gets treated to another appearance by Ohio State, a team that is eminently beatable and currently ranked #3 only on the fact that they have gone through the weak Big 10 schedule with only one loss.

Seeing the Buckeyes in the national championship would be the ultimate travesty. There are at least five teams that could knock off Ohio State. West Virginia, LSU, Georgia, Virginia Tech and USC come immediately to mind. Most of those could give Missouri quite a tussle as well.

Lost in all the Big 12 hoopla is West Virginia, losers of just one road game - to bitter rival South Florida - who trounced the Huskies of Connecticut last week to reach our #1 spot. The Mountaineers have had the goods for three years and have been in BCS bowl games in each of the last two, with this one a guarantee. A win over Pittsburgh in their final regular season home contest assures them of a spot in the national championship game. Who they will play is still up in the air, but will be solved this weekend.
