Week 1 notes

The West Coast Offense

Right now, the best team on the West Coast is not USC, but rather, the Cal Bears. While the Trojans won by a comfortable margin - 38-10 - over the outmanned Idaho Vandals, they hardly looked like national championship material. John David Booty, was, as he is, an ordinary quarterback, throwing three TD passes and being intercepted once.

The running game only cranked out 214 yards, but there were no notable runs as seven different backs had at least one carry. The defense looked good, but not great, as they hype over USC's D was a lot higher than the actual performance.

Meanwhile, Cal was flying around the field on both sides of the ball, handling a very good Tennessee squad that was in the game through the third quarter, eventually taking a 45-31 decision. Offensively, Justin Forsett was a load, carrying 26 times for 156 yards and a TD. DeSean Jackson had an electrifying 77-yard punt return and Lavelle Hawkins had 7 catches for 90 yards and a score. Nate Longshore looked poised in the pocket, getting good protection from his experienced offensive line, completing 19-28 for 241 yards and 2 TDs, while running for another without being intercepted.

Cal's defense wasn't outstanding, but they stopped Tennessee enough times to give their offense chances and they did score the opening touchdown of the game when Worrell Williams picked up an Erik Ainge fumble and rumbled 45 yards.

If Cal and USC squared off right now on a neutral field, Cal would beat them handily. USC is not even in the top five right now, though there's time for improvement.

No More Notre Dame

This will serve as, hopefully, the last mention of the Fighting Irish this season. After being mauled by Georgia Tech, 33-3, there's no need to mention what a genius Charlie Weis is, or report on any more of Notre Dame's games this season. They will be very fortunate to finish the season with a winning record.

The Irish had only 122 net yards of offense, though much of the credit has to be given to Tech's staunch defense, which held them to -8 yards rushing. Tech's Tashard Choice absolutely gashed the Irish defense for 196 yards on 26 carries. You want an outsider for the Heisman? Choice has the wheels and the heart of a lion. There may be no more bruising back in the entire nation.

As for the Irish, following the worst opening day loss in their storied history, they have the following schedule coming up: at Penn State, at Michigan, Michigan State, at Purdue, at UCLA, Boston College, USC. Mark them down for 2-6 at the very best. They may manage to beat either or both Michigan State or Purdue, but even those games are in doubt. In two words, they stink.

Michigan's Season is Over

How demoralizing was Michigan's opening day loss at home to Division I-AA Appalachian State? So bad that there are calls for Lloyd Carr's resignation following the 34-32 upset, likely one of the biggest in college football history.

While Carr is unlikely to resign, the loss pointed up the fact that Michigan's defense is not very solid. They were pounded in the final two games last season by Ohio State and USC in the Rose Bowl, and now, after returning only 4 starters on defense, they have been totally exposed.

Instead of looking to run the table in the Big 10, the Wolverines may be looking at up to six losses, with testing offenses like Oregon (next week), Penn State, Purdue, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Ohio State on the slate. If they come back from this loss at all, it will be the offense, which has plenty of experience and senior leadership, that will do it.
