Michigan in Dismay
After losing their opener to Appalacian State, the Michigan Wolverines followed that fiasco with an even more demoralizing loss to Oregon, in the Big House, no less.
This time it wasn't just the defense, as the offense imploded as well. QB Chad Henne didn't even play the second half and running back Mike Hart limped through most of the final two quarters as the Ducks waddled off with a 39-7 shelling.
If game one of Michigan's season wasn't enough for the Wolverines to begin shopping for a new head coach, the loss to Oregon surely must have turned some alumni heads against Lloyd Carr and his vanilla offense. He may last through this season, but this will be his last. Another loss, and he should voluntarily retire. The game has passed him by.
Louisville, where is the defense?
A #1-ranked team cannot give up 42 points to Middle Tennessee State, but that's exactly what the Louisville Cardinals did on Thursday night. Though they outscored their opponent, 58-42, the Blue Raiders gave them fits. It might have been an anomaly, but the dropped to #3 after LSU and Florida look destined to meet for the SEC Championship and there is no better conference in the country....
...Except Maybe the Pac-10
Oregon, Cal and USC all made the Top 25 rankings this week and Washington wasn't far out of it, as the Huskies upset Boise State. West coast teams are making a good early-season name for themselves, as are Big 12 squads, notably Texas, Oklahoma and Nebraska, each of whom won non-conference games against pretty good opponents - TCU, Miami and Wake Forest, respectively.
Nebraska, which squeaked by Wake, 17-14, may take a hit in the polls and our own Top 25, as they host USC in week 3.
