Week 7 notes

LSU, Cal Lose, Boston College, Ohio State Take Top Spots

When Michigan lost their first game of the season, at home, to Appalachian State, college football purists and pollsters alike should have taken note that this season was going to be like no other.

As the weeks roll on, upsets topple the top teams with increasing regularity, to the point that it's apparent that a national champion may be crowned in early 2008 with a loss on their record. In fact, it doesn't take a stretch of the imagination to believe that both participants in the National Championship game will have a loss already in their record.

Rather than believe that the best team in college football should be unblemished, maybe this is the way it ought to be. Polls are futile attempts at determining quality. Only actual play on the field will eventually become a satisfactory measure and thus the argument for a national playoff system will garner more support this season than ever before.

LSU lost at Kentucky, in overtime. Thus, their fall from #1 to #5 is understandable. Could they beat Boston College, Ohio State or South Florida? Maybe. Probably, on a neutral field, but that really needs to be worked out on the field, doesn't it?

Cal was upset at home by Oregon State, and, despite having their second string QB behind center. First stringer, Nate Longshore, was a late scratch due to a sprained ankle. He's expected to start next week at UCLA. Still, a home loss must be partially attributed to the defense, which didn't step up enough to hold down the Beavers in Oregon State's 31-28 win. Thus, Cal fell from #2 to #7 in our rankings.

That left Boston College, Ohio State and South Florida as the obvious choices for the top three slots. BC beat Notre Dame at South Bend, while Ohio State and South Florida posted mammoth wins. South Florida's 64-12 win over UCF was most impressive, but we're still holding off on a #1 or #2 ranking for the Bulls. They still have Rutgers, Connecticut, Syracuse, Cincinnati, Louisville and Pitt remaining. If they can run the table - a concept that could end this weekend at Rutgers - they would be in line for that national championship.

But, like every other sure thing this season, don't count on it.
