Thursday, November 1

7:30 pm Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech (-2 1/2, 40) - A tricky read here, pitting 5-3 Georgia Tech against the 6-2 Hokies, who were stunned last Thursday night, relinquishing a 10-0 lead over Boston College in the final 3 minutes to lose 14-10. It was, however Va Tech's first conference loss, while the Yellow Jackets have a 2-3 record in the ACC. The game has more meaning for the Hokies, who can still overtake Virginia in the Coastal division and make the conference championship game. One wonders how Georgia tech will fare without their emotional and on-field leader, Tashard Choice, who is lost for the season. The Hokies rebound on the road.

Prediction: Hokies 24 Yellow Jackets 17

Saturday, November 3

12:00 pm Wake Forest at Virginia (even, 44) - Both teams are 4-1 in the conference with hopes of reaching the championship game, making a win here critical. The Demon Deacons lost their first game of the season to Boston College and then lost at home to Nebraska, but have reeled off six straight wins since. Virginia's own seven-game win streak was snapped last week in a loss at NC State. The Cavaliers may be on the way to a disappointing end to their season. Following this game, they face Miami on the road and close out the regular season against Virginia Tech. With Wake Forest one of the hottest teams in the nation, it's hard to pick against them here.

Prediction: Demon Deacons 28 Cavaliers 23

12:00 pm Wisconsin at Ohio State (-15 1/2, 44 1/2) - It's amazing to see such a large line when the Badgers have just two losses, both on the road. While their loss at Penn State was a disaster, and probably cost them any chance at the Rose Bowl, they've since recovered and haven't allowed a touchdown in their last two games. Besides their new-found defensive prowess, the Badgers are still putting up 30 points a game on average. Sure, Ohio State seems to be putting it all together at the right time, but Wisconsin surely isn't going to be bowled over like Penn State was last week. The Badgers will score enough to keep this close and maybe even pull off a big upset. would anyone be surprised that a #1 team loses? Not really.

Prediction: Badgers 37 Buckeyes 34

12:30 pm Nebraska at Kansas (-19, 54 1/2) - At first blush, one would think this line is way out of whack. But, considering that Kansas is ranked #2 in scoring defense (10.3 ppg) and #5 in scoring offense (42.5), this begins to look like one of those statistical mismatches that so often result n routs. At home, with the Big 12 title in sight and maybe a legitimate shot at the national championship, there's no way Nebraska will stay within shouting distance of the Jayhawks.

Prediction: Jayhawks 45 Cornhuskers 21

3:30 Michigan (-4, 52) at Michigan St. - Well, here come the Wolverines. They've strung together seven straight wins and are ranked once again. Most of the credit has to go to the defense, which has allowed an average of 13.5 points per game during their 7-game win streak. While Michigan State has a credible offense, they still have lost four of their last five games, and the Spartan defense has been giving up points in bunches. With Michigan a little bit challenged offensively, Michigan State may make this interesting, but in the end, the Wolverines will find winning combinations.

Prediction: Wolverines 28 Spartans 21

3:30 Texas (-3, 61) at Oklahoma St. - The Longhorns are flying a bit under the radar with a 7-2 record. After back-to-back losses to Kansas State and Oklahoma, they've strung together three more wins and are ranked nationally, though a shot at the Big 12 championship is a long shot. Oklahoma State is 3-1 in the conference, but their wins over Texas Tech and Kansas State were both at home and by 4 and 2 points, respectively. Both offenses can put up points with the best of them, but the Texas defense is clearly superior. The Longhorns gain back a degree of respect here.

Prediction: Longhorns 38 Cowboys 28
