Thursday, September 6

7:00 pm Middle Tenn. St. at Louisville (-38, N/L) - Another tune up for the Cardinals against a better team than the one they pasted 73-10, Murray St. Will the Cardinals throw up another 70-spot? Probably not, as the Blue Raiders, despite losing their opener, 27-13 to Florida Atlantic, are still among the favorites to win the Sun Belt title. Still, they're no match for the powerhouse Cardinals.

Prediction: Cardinals 49 Blue Raiders 10

Friday, September 7

7:00 pm Navy at Rutgers (-15, N/L) - Last season, when Rutgers blanked the Midshipmen, 34-0, Navy was banged up and the Scarlet Knights simply overwhelmed them. It could be a bit of a different story this season, though Rutgers is still a powerful team and very good against the run, which Navy uses almost exclusively in their option offense. A closer game is in store, but the final result - a Rutgers win - will be the same.

Prediction: Scarlet Knights 35 Midshipmen 10

Saturday, September 8

11:10 am West Virginia (-23 1/2, 62) at Marshall - No contest here, as the Mountaineers rolled to a 62-24 romp over Western Michigan, amassing 542 yards of offense. Marshall has the home field, but that's about their only advantage. West Virginia could cover the line by the half as Marshall doesn't play much defense.

Prediction: Mountaineers 45 Thundering Herd 14

12:00 pm Nebraska (-8, 49 1/2) at Wake Forest - Last season was the dream season for the Demon Deacons. This year reality comes in the form of a tough schedule and plenty of top players lost to graduation. Count this one as a learning process for them as Nebraska finally has all the ingredients in place to run the West Coast offense effectively.

Prediction: Cornhuskers 38 Demon Deacons 21

12:00 pm Miami (FL) at Oklahoma (-10 1/2, 43) - This will be a severe test for both schools, but the Miami defense may turn out to be one of the best in the nation, again (they were 7th overall and 4th vs. the run last year). The Hurricanes are coming off a lopsided 31-3 bashing of Marshall, while the Sooners lit up North Texas, 79-10. The Sooners might have wanted to save some of those scores for this game, because they're likely to need them. The Sooner defense ranked 17th last season and returned 7 starters. The primary question is whether Miami can either force enough turnovers or generate enough offense to spring the upset. No matter which way one looks at this game, a tight, low-scoring affair is in the offing.

Prediction: Miami 17 Oklahoma 14

2:00 pm California (-14, 62) at Colorado St. - The Rams returned a shocking 20 starters from 2006, but still lost their opener to in-state rival Colorado, 30-27. Now they get the high-flying Golden Bears at home and may be a bit of an angry squad. Considering how well they fared in their opener, and the expected bounce for Cal after their big win over Tennessee last week, this one could be a close call. Don't count the Rams out of this one as the Bears' defense didn't show much last week. Cal will be fortunate to escape with a win.

Prediction: Golden Bears 38 Rams 31

2:30 pm N.C. State at Boston College (-13 1/2, 49 1/2) - The Wolfpack upset Boston College last season, 17-15, but there are changes this year. Tom O'Brien, who was coaching the Eagles last season, is now the head coach of NC State, and, the game will be in Boston, not Tobacco Road. Additionally, Nebraska transfer Harrison Beck will start for the Wolfpack, after leading a 2nd half comeback in their opening-day, 25-23 loss to Central Florida. Beck led them back from a 25-3 halftime deficit, only to lose on a failed 2-point attempt that would have tied the game.

Besides, Beck, the Wolfpack defense showed some resolve, shutting out the Golden Eagles in the 2nd half. Boston College had a solid tuneup, beating Wake Forest, 38-28, and they get to stay on home soil. Despite that, look for NC State to keep this one close and possibly spring the upset.

Prediction: Eagles 31 Wolfpack 24
