Saturday, September 8
3:30 pm Boise State (-3, 58) at Washington - The Huskies traveled to Syracuse and thumped the Orange, 42-12, while Boise State pounded Weber State, 56-7. This is a huge deal for both schools, as Boise tries to embellish their already stellar record garnered last season and Washington looks to rebound from a 5-7 2006 campaign. Boise State has already established their credentials and should prevail here. Washington beat up a very suspect Syracuse squad coming off a 4-8 record last year.
Prediction: Broncos 27 Huskies 21
6:30 pm BYU at UCLA (-7, 47) - Both teams are coming off solid victories in their season openers and should be primed for a bang-up event. The Cougars are a little off the radar now that all-time Mountain West passing leader John Beck has moved on to the next level, but they are still a favorite to challenge for their conference title. UCLA QB Ben Olson threw for 5 TDs in the Bruins' 45-17 win at Stanford last week and the BYU defense will be hard-pressed to contain them. The Bruins can move the ball on the ground or through the air and defend as well. Should not be close.
Prediction: UCLA 38 BYU 24
7:00 pm TCU at Texas (- 9 1/2, 44 1/2) - The Longhorns are everybody's pick to win the Big 12, though the Horned Frogs could probably care less. TCU was ranked in every preseason poll and they proved out in an opening-day win over Baylor, shutting out the Bears with a stifling defense that was ranked 4th overall and 4th against the run in 2006. The Frogs return 16 starters from last year's 11-2 team. Texas came back with 12 returning starters, but struggled on both sides of the ball in their 21-13 win over Arkansas State in their opener. The Longhorns are not anywhere near what they were two years ago when they won the national championship, and are ripe for the upset.
Prediction: Horned Frogs 20 Longhorns 14
Prediction: Nittany Lions 48 Fighting Irish 17
9:15 pm Virginia Tech at LSU (12 1/2, 38) - Make no doubt, the Tigers are one of the top three or four teams in the nation. The same cannot be said of the Hokies, who got off to a slow start to defeat East Carolina, 17-7 in their opener. This is just too much for Virginia Tech to handle so early on. A drop in the polls is imminent as the Tigers will maul them down in the bayou. The Hokies don't have much of an offense and that will be telling.
Prediction: Tigers 35 Hokies 13
