3:30 pm Ohio State (-4, 42) at Washington - It's difficult to understand how the Buckeyes are favored here after the Huskies just ended the nation's longest winning streak (14 games) with a 24-10 win over Boise State last week. Maybe it's the Buckeye defense, which hasn't allowed a TD in a pair of wins over Youngstown State and Akron. Those teams are nothing compared to what the Huskies will bring, however.
Redshirt freshman Jake Locker has had two solid games, beating up Syracuse, 42-12 in the opener before the defense stuffed Boise last week. OSU has some young talent on offense, but they return only 10 starters from last season and this will be their first real test. Considering how well Pac-10 teams are playing, Washington at home with points looks too good to pass up.
Prediction: Huskies 27 Buckeyes 24
3:30 pm Tennessee at Florida (-8, 55) - Tim Tebow has been fantastic in Florida's two wins, going 31 of 42 for 536 yards and 6 TDs passing and racking up another 131 rushing on 25 carries. Though their wins have come over Western Kentucky and Troy and were both at home, they were blowouts, 49-3 and 59-31, respectively. Tennessee bounced back after their opening night loss at Cal with a 39-19 romp over Southern Miss., but their defense doesn't appear to be ready for SEC play. Florida lost a lot of defensive players to graduation, but this was a national championship team with plenty of depth. These Gators may be even better than last years. Look for a swamping in the swamp.
Prediction: Gators 38 Volunteers 17
5:00 pm UCLA at Utah (-13 1/2, 43 1/2) - The 0-2 Utes don't have nearly the kind of defense to stop the UCLA juggernaut if the Bruins are on their game. UCLA is off to a 2-0 start with a 45-17 win at Stanford and a 27-17 victory over BYU last week. Looks like a long day and a long season in Utah.
Prediction: Bruins 42 Utes 17
6:30 pm Louisiana Tech at California (-33 1/2, 66 1/2) - This is a real trap game for the Bears, who escaped Colorado State last week with a 34-28 win. The Bulldogs came within a two-point conversion of knocking off Hawaii last week after winning their opener big, 28-7, over Central Arkansas. They've got a good offense, and neither of these teams can play much defense. Look for a bevy of scores on both sides with Cal pulling away late, though it won't be enough to cover the ridiculous line.
Prediction: Bears 58 Bulldogs 35
Prediction: Crimson Tide 31 Razorbacks 24
7:30 pm Louisville (-6 1/2, 76) at Kentucky - The Wildcats say they're ready to knock off the Cardinals, but they said that last year and got thumped 59-28 at Louisville. Wildcat QB Andre Woodson is one of the best in the nation, having already thrown for 468 yards and 5 TDs in a pair of blowout wins, but Louisville's Brian Brohm is every bit his equal. Brohm has tossed 41 completions for 776 yards and 9 TDs in 2 games. Kentucky's defense may be better than Louisville's, but they still can't match up with the nation's top offense (65.5 ppg).
Prediction: Cardinals 54 Wildcats 42
8:00 Boston College at Georgia Tech (-7, 48) - These two ACC teams didn't meet last season, though both had solid campaigns. While BC relies on Matt Ryan and a talented receiving corps, they probably won't see a defense as solid as the Yellow Jackets this season. On top of an oppressive defense capable of shutting down anyone, running back Tashard Choice is averaging 8.3 yards per carry and the offense has stabilized around him. Tech is going to wreck the Eagles.
Prediction: Yellow Jackets 28 Eagles 13
8:00 USC (-10, 50 1/2) at Nebraska - Premier matchup of the week pits the Cornhuskers' West Coast offense against what's supposed to be a legendary defense at USC. Last season, these two met in Cali, and Nebraska coach Bill Calahan ran almost exclusively against the Trojans, completely out of character. Look for the 'Huskers to open it up at home and play solid defense. The Trojans don't really scare anybody with their running attack, so QB John David Booty will have to shoulder the load and he may not be up to it against an aggressive, talented secondary. Nebraska can pull off a shocker at home.
Prediction: Cornhuskers 31 Trojans 28
