Saturday, Sept. 30

3:30 pm Clemson (-3, 47) at Georgia Tech - Though Georgia Tech was hammered last season, 31-7, by the Tigers, they have a solid defense, and can make a game of this. Clemson is on the cusp of greatness, at 4-0 and looking forward to a showdown with Virginia Tech next week. But they must focus on the Yellow Jackets first. James Davis and C.J. Spiller are a nightmare for opposing defenses, but Tech's is one of the best. Georgia Tech won't be able to move the ball much against the solid Tiger defense, so field position will play prominently in this one. A low-scoring affair will have East Coast football fans taking notice.

Prediction: Tigers 24 Yellow Jackets 13

3:30 pm Michigan State at Wisconsin (-7 1/2, 45 1/2) - The Spartans are 4-0, but their wins came over UAB, Bowling Green, Pitt and Notre Dame, teams with a combined record of 5-9. By contrast, the Badgers have already bested Iowa in conference and opened their season with a win over Washington State. They got their defense right just in time for last week's 17-13 win over Iowa and are looking at running the table in the Big 10. Michigan State's defense will be hard-pressed all day to stop they dynamic Badger attack. No surprise here in another Wisconsin win.

Prediction: Badgers 34 Spartans 21

3:30 pm Cal at Oregon (-5 1/2, 73) - This will almost certainly be the best game of the day, with both teams at 4-0 and seeking the PAC-10 title. Of course, neither has yet to play USC, but this still looms a major stepping stone. The Ducks have the home field and fans on their side, but the Golden Bears have plenty of fire-power on offense and an opportunistic defense that can ground the high-flying Oregonians. The line is a bit generous to a team that may be a legitimate BCS bowl threat and already beat Oregon 45-24 last season. Should be plenty of scoring in a real shootout. Overtime is a distinct possibility.

Prediction: Golden Bears 48 Ducks 45

5:00 pm Alabama at Florida St. (-2 1/2, 43 1/2) - The Seminoles rebounded from their opening day defeat to Clemson (24-18) with a pair of wins over UAB and Colorado, but the Crimson Tide brings more of an arsenal than either of those teams. Florida State must be respected on defense, making it tough for Alabama to score, but they have only put up 68 points in 3 games, against so-so opponents. Alabama lost a tough one in OT to Georgia last week, 23-20, after topping Arkansas the week prior. Look for the Tide to get rolling again with a convincing win.

Prediction: Crimson Tide 27 Seminoles 17

8:00 pm USC (-20 1/2, 57 1/2) at Washington - The Huskies probably got too much credit for beating Boise State in their second game of the season, because they were hammered by Ohio State (33-14) the following week and handled at UCLA (44-31) last time out. They are a bit short on experience and defense and that's not good against the USC juggernaut. Another blowout is in store for the Trojans.

Prediction: Trojans 52 Huskies 17

8:00 pm Auburn at Florida (-18, 55) - The Tigers lost two home games - to South Florida, 26-23 and Mississippi State, 19-14 and now venture into the swamp as nearly 3 TD underdogs. Their 55-20 win over New Mexico St. may have them feeling a little better for this one. The defense is sound, and Florida looked a little vulnerable, winning at Mississippi, 30-24 last week. This is, after all, still the SEC, and there are great athletes on both sides of the ball. The game will be much closer than the line indicates, though Florida is likely to get the W.

Prediction: Gators 27 Tigers 21
