Fearless Rick's College Football Week 9 Picks - Late Games

Rick Gagliano | October 23

3:30 pm Florida (-9, N/A) at Georgia - Despite both teams sporting 5-2 records, Florida is a far superior team. The Bulldogs were hammered at Tennessee two weeks ago, 35-14, and just barely beat Vanderbilt, 20-17, last week. The trouble for Georgia is an inconsistent offense that can't sustain drives and while that's a problem against most teams, it's a recipe for disaster against the Gators. This one is lights out, all Gators, all day long.

Prediction: Gators 45 Bulldogs 17

3:30 pm South Florida (-4 1/2) at Connecticut - The Huskies aren't getting the respect they deserve, and haven't all season long. At 6-1, their only loss was a 17-16 setback at Virginia two weeks ago. Incidentally, the Cavaliers are battling for the ACC title at 6-1.

Besides the record, the Huskies are the third ranked scoring defense in the country, at 12.7 ppg. Besides their record and solid defense, UConn did beat Louisville 21-17 last week, holding the Cardinals to their lowest point total of the season. Both of these programs are young, but the Huskies are poised to make a real impact with a win.

Prediction: Huskies 31 Bulls 21

4:30 pm Virginia (-3, N/A) at NC State - The 7-1 Cavaliers are another team that's flown under the national radar thus far, but they are leading the ACC Coastal division with a 4-0 record in the conference. They've won 4 games by a total of 6 points, but they still count as wins and this line is not indicative of the quality of the team. NC State is 3-5 overall and 0-3 in the conference, and have not been generally competitive in most of their games. Virginia should handle them with ease.

Prediction: Cavaliers 35 Wolfpack 13

7:00 pm Kansas (-2 1/2, N/A) at Texas A&M - A big test for the undefeated Jayhawks, as they travel to College Station for this game with the 5-2 Aggies. KU is probably the surprise of the Big 12, if not the nation, winning all 7 of their starts this season, after a 6-6 record last year. Improvement has come on both sides of the ball; Kansas is ranked #3 in scoring offense at 45.9 ppg, and #2 in scoring defense at 10.1 ppg. The Jayhawks have won three straight against Big 12 opponents, the closest being last week's 19-14 win at Colorado. The Aggies simply do not match up well enough to make this a competitive game after the first quarter. Kansas will roll on.

Prediction: Jayhawks 42 Aggies 21

8:00 pm Ohio St. (-4, N/A) at Penn St. - Always a tough trip to Happy Valley, Penn State has an experience edge at QB and arguably the defense to match up well with the Buckeyes. Anthony Morelli has struggled at times for the Nittany Lions, but his play over the past two weeks has been solid, going a combined 38-60 for 411 yards, 3 TDs and 1 INT in wins over Wisconsin and Indiana. The 5-2 Lions also are unbeaten at home and a win here would put them in the thick of the Big Ten race.

8-0 Ohio State, ranked #1 in most of the polls - somewhat by default - does struggle on offense, and may have to be very conservative with the football against the ball-hawking Penn St. defenders. The Nittany Lions will be able to slow down Chris Wells and keep the Buckeyes in check. A couple of turnovers will probably be the difference in an unsurprising upset.

Prediction: Nittany Lions 23 Buckeyes 19

10:00 pm California at Arizona St. (-3, N/A) - Cal's offense is among the most explosive in the nation, though the Sun Devils have a statistical edge in scoring, total yards and passing yards. Add to that the fact that Arizona St. has a potentially great defense (15 ppg, 304 yards per game) and no losses, and this becomes more of a lopsided affair than the line would suggest. The Golden Bears are allowing a whopping 26.1 points per outing and that's against the likes of Tennessee (31 points), Arizona (27), Oregon St. (31) and UCLA (30). After suffering their second loss of the season last week at the hands of the Bruins, Cal may not be fully prepared for such a large task as the Sun Devils present.

Prediction: Sun Devils 42 Golden Bears 27
