PRESEASON WEEK 4

Thursday, Aug. 30

Buffalo at Detroit (-3 1/2, 37 1/2) 7:00 pm - The Bills have lots of promise but the offensive line looked confused for the past couple of weeks and they need to work on that. The Lions have shown that they can put up points on anybody this season and may give their second stringers a chance to show off some in this one. Could be a blowout.

Prediction: Lions 27 Bills 13

N.Y. Giants at New England (-4, 36) 7:30 pm - This very much depends on who's playing in which positions, though the Patriots have superior depth on the bench and those guys are probably going to see extended playing time. The NFL is correct in playing these games on Thursday night as most of them will be uninteresting except for serious analysts. This could be one to catch as both teams may be contending and backups may play key roles in the regular season.

Prediction: Patriots 28 Giants 21

N.Y. Jets at Philadelphia (-2 1/2, 37) 7:30 pm - Shouldn't the Jets be favored here, considering the way Philly played at Pittsburgh last week? They just looked flat and disinterested and they'll likely come out the same way this week. You'll hear "doesn't matter" a lot after the Jets paste them here.

Prediction: Jets 31 Eagles 10

Washington at Jacksonville (-3 1/2, 35) 7:30 pm - Not much to go on, but if backup David Garrard gets into the game, the Jags could run wild. Washington is still wondering what kind of team they are, though the defenses on both side seem solid.

Prediction: Jaguars 17 Redskins 10

--- Story continues below ---

Cleveland at Chicago (-4, 37) 8:00 pm - The Bears will play their starters sparingly, and Cleveland will want to see more Brady Quinn, but the matchup is simply not favorable for the Browns.

Prediction: Bear 21 Browns 14

Dallas (-2, 37) at Minnesota 8:00 pm - One of just 3 road favorites, the Cowboys took their first preseason loss to a fired up Houston squad last week. The Vikings haven't shown much in any of their games and lost to the Seahawks 30-13 last week. Plenty for them to work on, but Dallas has plenty of depth and players seeking roster spots.

Prediction: Cowboys 24 Vikings 10

Green Bay at Tennessee (-6 1/2, 37 1/2) 8:00 pm - Pretty fat line, considering that Aaron Rodgers will get a lot of playing time here and Vince Young may only be in for a quarter or so. In a game that actually has no meaning, I'd be willing to take those points.

Prediction: Packers 24 Titans 23

Houston at Tampa Bay (-3, 37) 8:00 pm - Both of these teams are looking to prove their mettle, so this could turn out to be one of the better games t watch. Houston's looking better every week, while the Bucs are, well, punchless on offense, to put it mildly. This one goes to the Texans.

Prediction: Texans 17 Buccaneers 13

Kansas City at St. Louis (-3, 37) 8:00 pm - About as ugly as a game can get here in St. Louis. KC has looked ridiculously bad and the Rams have not proven much of anything, especially losing to Oakland last week. The Rams are probably just a little better than the Chiefs, and they're at home, so that's enough to give them the nod.

Prediction: Rams 20 Chiefs 13

Miami (-1 1/2, 38) at New Orleans 8:00 pm - I don't get this line at all, except to believe that the Saints will sit their talented offensive players and Miami will play the first team more. That said, the Saints second defensive unit may be as good as their first, which isn't all that great, but probably good enough to get a couple of turnovers and win this one.

Prediction: Saints 20 Dolphins 17

Pittsburgh at Carolina (-4 1/2, 36) 8:00 pm - The Steelers looked pretty good in their win over Philly, and Carolina still has lots of work to do on offense, so their starters may get more playing time. Pittsburgh is already playing with confidence and should win on the road.

Prediction: Steelers 24 Panthers 17
