Atlanta at Jacksonville (-10, 34 1/2) 1:00 pm - The Jaguars lost, 13-10, at home to the Titans last week, in a role reversal type of game in which the Jags gave up 282 yards rushing while running for just 72 themselves. Two conclusions can be drawn: Jacksonville's defense isn't right or ready, and the move to replace Byron Leftwich at QB with David Garrard didn't quite work out.
Atlanta was swamped in Minnesota, 24-3, though the game was close until the 4th quarter. Joey Harrington hit 23-32 passes for 199 yards, but was sacked 6 times and threw 2 INTs, the last of which was returned 14 yards for a TD by Antoine Winfield. The Falcons are likely to have more success against Jacksonville, both on the ground and through the air, so an upset looms. The line is incredibly generous, though the Falcons are on the road for the second straight week.
Prediction: Falcons 17 Jaguars 14
Buffalo at Pittsburgh (-9 1/2, 37 1/2) 1:00 pm - The Bills may get an emotional boost as news on injured tight end Kevin Everett was very positive on Tuesday, with doctors predicting that he would be able to walk and live a normal life after suffering a potentially lethal spine injury in the Denver game. Pittsburgh hammered the Browns in Cleveland on week 1, as expected, but this game will be more competitive. Say what you like about the Bills, but they are a competitive bunch and should be able to keep this one close.
Prediction: Steelers 27 Bills 21
Cincinnati (-6 1/2, 41 1/2) at Cleveland 1:00 pm - Until the Browns realize that they're playing in the NFL, they're going to be an easy mark for most teams. The Bengals gutted out a win over the Ravens on Monday night and must travel, though not very far, so the usual bugaboo over giving points at home to divisional rivals can be somewhat discounted here. The Browns turned the ball over 5 times against Pittsburgh, so they'll have to hold onto it better if they hope to stay in this game. Cincy didn't actually look very sharp, but you have to give the Ravens' defense some credit for that. Looks like a blowout as the Bengals gain momentum.
Prediction: Bengals 35 Browns 13
Green Bay at N.Y. Giants (even, 37 1/2) 1:00 pm - The Packers stayed in their home opener against the Eagles, and eventually won it, 16-13, with defense and ball control and those elements should come into play against the banged-up Giants. Eli Manning probably will start at QB for the Giants despite a bruised shoulder, but his actual status may not be known until game time. The same goes for running back Brandon Jacobs and DE Osi Umenyoira. New York has no discernible defense at this point and Brett Favre should pick them apart. New York is in disarray on both sides of the ball while the Packers - though not a great team - have potential and momentum.
Prediction: Packers 31 Giants 24
Prediction: Panthers 30 Texans 10
Indianapolis (-7, 46) at Tennessee 1:00 pm - The Titans rolled up 282 yards rushing against Jacksonville last week, but only managed 13 points. Failure to convert opportunities is going to kill them against the Colts, who looked awesome on Thursday night in the their smackdown of New Orleans. They get extra time off and should handle the Titans with relative ease.
Prediction: Colts 27 Titans 13
New Orleans (-3, 42) at Tampa Bay 1:00 pm - The Saints are probably not as bad as they looked when getting stomped by Indianapolis last week, but the Bucs are probably as bad as their 20-6 loss at Seattle suggests. They have little in the way of offense, though the defense should be their strong suit. Interestingly, the Saints are only 3 point favs, but even on Tampa's home turf, they're probably a better team. These two meet twice a season, and the Saints took both last year, winning at home by 3 but burying the Bucs, 31-14, in Tampa.
Prediction: Saints 24 Buccaneers 17
San Francisco at St. Louis (-3, 44 1/2) 1:00 pm - San Fran lucked out a win at home over Arizona on Monday night. They were outgained by the Cardinals, QB Alex Smith hit only 15 of 31 passes for 126 yards, but put together a drive to score the winning TD with 22 seconds left to play. St. Louis just looked bad against Carolina, but they get the benefit of being home for the second straight week. The 49ers are an improving team, and last year these two exchanged home wins. This year, San Fran should take them both as they challenge for the division lead and the Rams falter.
Prediction: 49ers 31 Rams 27
