Fearless Rick's NFL Week 2 Picks - Late Games

Dallas (-3 1/2, 40) at Miami 4:05 pm - Miami took Washington into overtime, but that's not saying much, and the Cowboys simply have too much offense for the Dolphins to contain for 60 minutes. Dallas probably needs some work on their defense as well, but Miami doesn't offer much offensively, so the Cowboys should easily get to 2-0 here.

Prediction: Cowboys 27 Dolphins 10

Minnesota at Detroit (-3, 42 1/2) 4:05 pm - Wow, the Lions favored against the Vikings? Interesting, especially since the Lions only beat up on the Raiders while the Vikings looked impressive on defense, though mostly against the run in their win over Atlanta. This should serve as a nice showcase for the top two offensive rookies in the league, Detroit's Calvin Johnson and Minny's Adrian Peterson. Both looked very good in their debuts and each should get plenty of touches here.

My money's on Peterson and the Vikes, as Detroit gave up plenty of yardage to a weak Oakland squad last week and really haven't faced a quality back yet. Besides, Jon Kitna threw two INTs last week and he's bound to run into similar problems every week as he'll see a lot of exotic defenses designed to stop the potent passing attack.

Prediction: Vikings 23 Lions 20

Seattle (-3, 44) at Arizona 4:05 pm - This should serve notice as to whether the Seahawks are better than last year's squad and whether the NFC West is really as competitive as some think. Matt Leinart had a horrible night in SF, throwing for only 102 yards and tossing up 2 INTs, so look for him to improve here. The Cardinals won late last year at home, 27-21, after dropping a 21-10 decision in Seattle earlier in the year, and they should win their home opener.

Prediction: Cardinals 27 Seahawks 24

Kansas City at Chicago (-12, 34 1/2) 4:15 pm - Chicago really needs to get its offense together. They looked somewhat pathetic against the Chargers, though San Diego may be the class of the league. The Bears also need to take better care of the rock, as they coughed it up 4 times against San Diego. Noting all that, KC just plain stinks. They may be the worst team in the league. The Bears should win this one big.

Prediction: Bears 31 Chiefs 0

--- Story continues below ---

N.Y. Jets at Baltimore (N/A, N/A) 4:15 pm - No lines here as the health of both QBs - Baltimore's Steve McNair and NY's Chad Pennington - are in doubt. Backups Kellen Clemens (Jets) and Kyle Boller (Ravens) could be in the starting lineup. Whoever gets the nod and whatever the line is (I figure roughly Ravens -3, with an over/under of 36 1/2) the Ravens will be the choice. Boller has experience and the Jets were mauled by New England last week. Baltimore's defense will shut down any NY offense.

Prediction: Ravens 20 Jets 10

Oakland at Denver (-9 1/2, 39) 4:15 pm - The Broncos moved the ball up and down the field against Buffalo last week, but still needed a last-second Jason Elam field goal to get the win. The Raiders still have a solid defense and will pressure Bronco QB Jay Cutler into mistakes. The Raiders may not win this one, but it will be a close call.

Prediction: Broncos 23 Raiders 20

San Diego at New England (-3 1/2, 46 1/2) 8:15 pm - A really nice matchup between two of the AFC's preeminent contenders. Both teams showed resolve in Week 1, taking control in the 2nd half against quality opponents. While the Patriots put their offense on display for all to see, San Diego will bring more pressure and better coverage against Brady, Moss and their offense. The real advantage is when the Chargers have the ball against New England's somewhat short-handed defense. Philip Rivers should expose their secondary and LaDainian Tomlinson will probably have a big day. Still, the Pats are very tough at home and the Chargers need to expunge last year's playoff meltdown against the Pats. A close call goes to the Chargers. The over is virtually guaranteed here.

Prediction: Chargers 31 Patriots 30

Monday, Sep. 17

Washington at Philadelphia (-7, 40) 8:30 pm - Philly looked ridiculous against the Packers last week, while the Redskins handled Miami in overtime. The Eagles are still the class of the division, especially on defense, but they have to figure out the play calling and avoid turnovers, which killed them last week. Redskin QB Jason Campbell tossed a pair of INTs last week and Philly might pick off a couple here. Look for Donovan McNabb to break out a bit here as the Eagles open up the passing game.

Prediction: Eagles 34 Redskins 10
