Sunday, September 23

Cincinnati at Seattle (-3 1/2, 50 1/2) 4:05 pm - Sorry, Bengals fans, your team has no defense and Seattle is smarting after losing to Arizona last week. Being on the road for the second straight week isn't going to help matters for the Bengals either. Shaun Alexander should rush for at least 120 yards against a defense allowing 434.0 ypg - and that's against Baltimore and Cleveland. Imagine what the Seahawks are seeing on tape. Wow! Could be a season-high scoring effort for Seattle.

Prediction: Seahawks 42 Bengals 28

Cleveland at Oakland (-3, 40 1/2) 4:05 pm - The Browns will come down to earth after last week's ridiculous 51-45 win over Cincy as they face an aggressive defense in Oakland. The Raiders, however, are 0-2 largely to defensive lapses and inconsistency in the passing game. Seriously, they need a QB, as does Cleveland, though Derek Anderson proved to be pretty good in his first start, throwing for 328 and 5 TDs against the Bengals. The Browns have more talent than people will admit and they'll show up here.

Prediction: Browns 27 Raiders 24

Jacksonville at Denver (-3, 35 1/2) 4:05 pm - The Broncos are 2-0 and sitting alone atop the AFC West. The Jags have been inconsistent thus far with David Garrard at the helm, but the gutted out a win over Atlanta last week and may be headed in the right direction. Denver's wins came over Buffalo and Oakland, two so-so squads, while the Jags lost their opener to Tennessee by a mere three points and have been playing solid defense. With a bye next week, Jacksonville will be up for the upset and put together some impressive drives against the smallish Denver defense.

Prediction: Jaguars 24 Broncos 20

Carolina (-4, 36 1/2) at Atlanta 4:15 pm - The Panthers looks horrible in their home opener against Texas and one wonders if this team really is a contender or a pretender. Joey Harrington, who has been largely ineffective at QB in the Falcons' two losses, will probably start, but he'll be on a short leash with newly-signed Byron Leftwich apparently ready to take over behind center. This game could unfold in any number of ways, but the Panthers still don't seem capable of stopping anyone consistently. Should they get a solid lead, expect to see Leftwich in the second half, and he could spark a late rally. Carolina should prevail, however.

Prediction: Panthers 20 Falcons 13

N.Y. Giants at Washington (-4, 40 1/2) 4:15 pm - The Giants have problems everywhere, but mostly on defense and in the running game and that's a problem against the 2-0 Redskins. Washington should put a serious thumping on the uninspired New Yorkers, who will probably miss the playoffs as much as they miss a guy named Tiki, who, in all seriousness, screwed his teammates by announcing his retirement mid-season before the Giants could line up a solid replacement. Barber also hasn't been shy about criticizing the Giants. Generally, he's come off as an egomaniacal loser on TV and should shut up. The Giants have enough problems without having to hear him rub it in.

Prediction: Redskins 28 Giants 17

Dallas at Chicago (-3, 42) 8:15 pm - Nice game for the Sunday finale. Dallas has been rolling on offense, but their defense leaves much to be desired and they will probably make Rex Grossman look good, which really takes some doing. They also will run into a brick wall known as the Bears' defense and this will be a real test for the 2-0 Cowboys. Chicago could have won their opener in San Diego if they generated any kind of offense and didn't turn the ball over in a couple of critical situations and their win over KC last week was somewhat of a yawner. They'll show what they're really made of here in a big win and possible playoff preview.

Prediction: Bear 34 Cowboys 20

Monday, Sept. 24

Tennessee at New Orleans (-4, 45 1/2) 8:30 pm - Until the Saints play defense, they're not going to beat anyone. Besides, the Titans are for real and should be very competitive here. For all the talk about Reggie Bush and Drew Brees, the real unstoppable force - as he was in college - is Vince Young, the Titans' QB. The Saints will go marching out of the playoffs with a loss here.

Prediction: Titans 30 Saints 24
