Sunday, Sept. 30

Seattle (-2, 41) at San Francisco 4:05 pm - The 49ers need to regroup after being pounded at Pittsburgh, but one wonders if getting back to home ground and playing a divisional foe is the proper tonic. Seattle lost twice to San Fran last season, but, of course, the Seahawks were a pretty banged up bunch in 2006. Both teams are 2-1, but the San Francisco offense just doesn't seem to be clicking. Their two wins have been by a total of three points and they've only put up 53 points. Seattle should be able to shred the 'Niners rushing defense, which ranks near the bottom of the league (26th) and come away with a win.

Prediction: Seahawks 24 49ers 17

Tampa Bay at Carolina (N/L, N/L) 4:05 pm - No line here due to an elbow injury to Panthers' QB Jake Delhomme. If he's unable to go, David Carr will start and he'll be well enough prepared to manage the offense. Tampa Bay is one of the NFL's biggest surprises, but their wins have come over New Orleans and St. Louis, and both were at home. Let's say Carr starts, the game is rated even and the o/u is 38. I'll take Carolina all day long.

Prediction: Panthers 23 Buccaneers 9

Denver at Indianapolis (-10, 46) 4:15 pm - This should be a very entertaining game, as the Broncos have looked pretty darn good in their two wins, but ran into a Jacksonville juggernaut last week. The Jags controlled the line of scrimmage, the clock and took advantage of turnovers for the win. The Colts seem to be just rolling along, but they aren't winning by much as everybody plays them tough. Expect the same here, with Jay Cutler getting more comfortable with the offense and able to pick apart Indy with short passes, screens and the running of Travis Henry. Peyton Manning will get in his throws and the Colts will probably win, but it should be close.

Prediction: Colts 31 Broncos 27

Kansas City at San Diego (-11 1/2, 38 1/2) 4:15 pm - I'll keep saying this until San Diego proves me wrong. You are not supposed to fire your head coach after a 14-2 season. Replacing Marty Schottenheimer with Norv Turner was a bonehead move. While KC isn't exactly a powerhouse, they did eke out their first win last week in their first home game, and they were one of just two teams to beat the Chargers last season. After a slow start, they seem to be headed in the right direction. KC actually ranks #4 on defense, and they should be able to contain the Chargers enough to keep this close. Take those points as the Chiefs should be able to force a couple of turnovers.

Prediction: Chargers 27 Chiefs 21

Pittsburgh (-6, 42) at Arizona 4:15 pm - The Steelers aren't very secretive about their offensive scheme. They pound the ball with Willie Parker, opening things up for Big Ben Roethlisberger. The Cardinals are well aware of what's coming, and should be able to keep the Steelers contained. Arizona is 1-2, but their losses have both been by 3 points. This is a team on the verge of making the playoffs, and a win here would be a very positive step. The Cardinals are 8-3-2 ATS as an underdog the past two seasons, while Pittsburgh is just 3-5-1 ATS on the road. Arizona could win this straight up.

Prediction: Cardinals 23 Steelers 20

Philadelphia (-3, 47 1/2) at N.Y. Giants 8:15 pm - Sure, Donovan McNabb proved all of his critics wrong with the big performance last week against Detroit, but it was still against the Lions' defense, which is not really a big test. The Giants were much more impressive in knocking off Washington on the road. New York has a better offense, the defense is stepping up and they know the Eagles well, beating them 36-22 near the end of last season. Giving the Giants points at home is usually a big mistake, and this time it's Philly fans who will pay.

Prediction: Giants 35 Eagles 21

Monday, Oct. 1

New England (-7, 52 1/2) at Cincinnati 8:30 pm - Cincy simply doesn't have the defensive bodies to stop the Patriots. Nobody does. This should be the most boring rout of the Monday night season.

Prediction: Patriots 44 Bengals 14

Open date: Jacksonville, New Orleans, Tennessee, Washington
