Sunday, October 14

Cincinnati (-3, 41 1/2) at Kansas City 1:00 pm - How about these numbers? The Chiefs rank last in the league in scoring at 12.8 ppg while the Bengals are the most generous defense, allowing a whopping 32.3 points per game. The Cincy offense is far superior to that of the Chiefs, so even a nominal effort by the Bengal defenders should be sufficient to produce a win. The best offense KC has face this season was San Diego's, and they held the Chargers to 16 points. The Bengals should be able to do better than that, even in KC.

Prediction: Bengals 23 Chiefs 17

Houston at Jacksonville (-6 1/2, 37) 1:00 pm - Here are two teams that match up quite well and know each other's tendencies. The Texans won both meetings last season and one could argue that Houston is even better this season. The problems for the Texans are that wide receiver Andre Johnson is out, RB Ahman Green is questionable for this game and the Jaguars' defense is rock-solid. Still, the Jags are having trouble scoring and Houston can stack the run well. With Jacksonville 3-1 and Houston 3-2, this is a critical game, especially for the Texans. While they may not win it, Houston should keep it close, very, very close.

Prediction: Texans 17 Jaguars 16

Miami at Cleveland (-4 1/2, 44 1/2) 1:00 pm - The Browns are actually playing quite well while certain players on the 0-5 Dolphins may not be putting out a complete effort. Miami is actually better on the road having lost all three of their road games by 3 points apiece. The 2-3 Browns show losses to Pittsburgh, New England and Oakland, so there's no real shame there and they have more than enough fire power (and fan support) to win this game rather handily. Neither team has much of a defense, so the over may be the best way to go here.

Prediction: Browns 38 Dolphins 28

Minnesota at Chicago (-5 1/2, 37 1/2) 1:00 pm - Well, the Bears righted their ship just in time on Sunday night against the Packers and that renewed confidence should provide another winning effort. QB Brian Griese is going to continue to improve and that spells trouble for the Vikes, who actually aren't bad defensively, but their offense is forcing them to spend too much time on the field. If Chicago can get any kind of running game out of Cedric Benson - who's been a bust so far as the #1 back - they can even their record at 3-3.

Prediction: Bears 23 Vikings 13

Philadelphia (-3, 42) at N.Y. Jets 1:00 pm - Here you have two of the biggest disappointments of the season. Both reached the playoffs last year but Philly is 1-3 while the Jets are a miserable 1-4. The Eagles desperately need Brian Westbrook back (he's listed as questionable), though Donovan McNabb has looked mighty shaky all season. Some dubious play-calling hasn't helped the Eagles either. As bad as the Eagles look, the Jets are a basket case. The Eagles will deny their weak running game and pressure Chad Pennington into turnovers. Could get very ugly.

Prediction: Eagles 34 Jets 17

St. Louis at Baltimore (-9 1/2, 37) 1:00 pm - Gus Frerotte actually had a pretty fair day as the Rams' signal-caller in their 34-31 loss to Arizona, tossing 3 TDs, but also throwing 3 INTs. He will likely be behind center on Sunday on the road at Baltimore, and that's going to be a much different experience than playing the Cardinals indoors, at home. The Rams are very banged up, while the Ravens seem poised to hit their best stride, especially on defense, an area in which they excel. The Rams are converting just over a third of their 3rd-down attempts and that number is likely to worsen against the aggressive Ravens.

Prediction: Ravens 24 Rams 10

Tennessee at Tampa Bay (-3, 37 1/2) 1:00 pm - the 3-1 Titans are undefeated in two road games, and while the Bucs are likely the class of the NFC South, they're no match for Vince Young and the hard-charging Tennesseans. The Buccaneers were pounded, 33-14 at Indy last week and they are having their usual offensive problems, though their defense should keep them close here.

Prediction: Titans 21 Buccaneers 16

Washington at Green Bay (-3, 40 1/2) 1:00 pm - The Packers 8-game win streak (dating back to last season) was snuffed out by the Bears Sunday and the lack of a running game is beginning to rear its ugly head. The Packers are only averaging 67 yards on the ground and the Redskins are well aware of that deficiency. Washington plays solid all-around defense and will stymie the Packers into another home loss.

Prediction: Redskins 24 Packers 21
