Carolina at Arizona (-4, 40 1/2) 4:05 pm - Oddly enough, 3-2 Carolina has won all of their road games and lost their two home contests. Arizona, also 3-2, won their first road game last week, topping St. Louis 34-31. They are undefeated in two home outings. Both teams have QB issues, with Kurt Warner taking the reins full-time, now that Matt Leinart is out for the season (there goes another $12 million) and David Carr will continue to start for the Panthers, who just signed Vinnie Testaverde, as Carr is also nicked a bit. It's not hard to figure which QB gives their team a better chance at winning - it's Warner, who's actually looked pretty good. Neither team holds much of an advantage in any statistical category, though most of them edge towards the Cardinals, so home field and the time differential may be the biggest edge of all.

Prediction: Cardinals 28 Panthers 17

New England (-5 1/2, 52 1/2) at Dallas 4:15 pm - You can slice and dice the numbers all you like, but after watching Tony Romo toss 5 interceptions against the Bills on Monday night, there's little wonder that the Patriots have been installed as nearly-TD favorites. Dallas cannot stay with New England for a full 60 minutes on either side of the ball. No team, save Indianapolis, can. Tough afternoon in Big D.

Prediction: Patriots 31 Cowboys 20

Oakland at San Diego (-9 1/2, 44 1/2) 4:15 pm - The Chargers seem to finally have put it all together, though what they did to Denver is not likely to happen as neatly against the Raiders. The Raiders actually have been producing efficiently on offense, while their defense has given up far too many yards, both on the ground and through the air. Still, San Diego hasn't impressed many defensively and this one will be closer than the line suggests.

Prediction: Chargers 35 Raiders 30

New Orleans at Seattle (-6 1/2, 42 1/2) 8:15 pm - The Saints just ain't got it this season, though Seattle fell pretty flat last week in Pittsburgh. New Orleans is allowing nearly 30 points per game; Seattle is surrendering just 14.8. Neither tea is lighting up the scoreboard with any kind of regularity, and this could come down to basic trench warfare and a very low-scoring game. In that case, the Seahawks should win, but only by 3 or 4 points.

Prediction: Seahawks 20 Saints 17

Monday, Oct. 15

N.Y. Giants (-3 1/2, 43 1/2) at Atlanta 8:30 pm - The Giants as road favorites against the flighty Falcons presents all kinds of scenarios, though most of them favor New York, a team on somewhat of a roll, having won three straight. The Falcons are just disorganized, banged-up and their 1-4 record includes losses of 6, 7, 7, and 21 points. Difficult to see how they can stay on the same field with the towering Giants.

Prediction: Giants 27 Falcons 19

Open date: Buffalo, Denver, Detroit, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, San Francisco
