Sunday, Oct. 21
Arizona at Washington (-8 1/2, 36) 1:00 pm - Arizona suddenly finds itself in an untenable condition, without a healthy quarterback. Last man standing, Kurt Warner, has a torn ligament in his elbow and says he will play if able. That's a tough hombrČ, but how well he'll do against the rugged Redskin defense, at home, is another question. The Cards are still tied for first in the NFC West, at 3-3 with Seattle, and the 'Skins are in the hunt at 4-2 in the East, so this game is important. Arizona was pounded by Carolina last week, 25-10, while Washington was losing a tough game at Green Bay, 17-14. Even if Warner goes, Washington should win this one handily,
Prediction: Redskins 24 Cardinals 13
Atlanta at New Orleans (-9, 42) 1:00 pm - After watching Atlanta stumble through four quarters of ineptitude against the Giants on Monday night, they must travel to the SuperDome to face last Sunday night's victors, who shocked Seattle on the road. The Saints may be back, but they're going to have to do more tweaking of the offense in coming weeks. This should be a good week for experimenting and the defense figures to shut down Atlanta with relative ease.
Prediction: Saints 31 Falcons 16
Baltimore (-3, 34 1/2) at Buffalo 1:00 pm - The good news for Buffalo is that Trent Edwards will start in place of the ineffective J.P. Losman. More good news comes in the fact that the Ravens have no offense, which should take a little pressure off the defense. The Bills suffered one of the most wrenching defeats - at home to Dallas - two weeks ago on Monday night, and have had the bye week to forget and recover. Baltimore converted only 5 of 15 third downs in their 22-7 win over St. Louis and scored only one TD (and 5 Matt Stover field goals). Baltimore will come in with a solid game plan, but the Bills, hungry for a win, will get one at home.
Prediction: Bills 23 Ravens 20
Minnesota at Dallas (-9 1/2, 46 1/2) 1:00 pm - Will Dallas suffer an emotional letdown after their big loss to New England? It's a possibility. Another possibility is that they will see plenty of Minnesota's Adrian Peterson, who last week stamped himself as the likely rookie of the year with his record-setting performance over the Bears. The Cowboys should be able to put the clamps down on Peterson, though their backs will find it tough going against the Vikings on the ground. If they're smart - and they probably are - Dallas will throw a lot on first and second downs and cruise to a win via their talented receivers and Tony Romo's accurate arm. Dallas may let down a bit, but these Vikings are not New England.
Prediction: Cowboys 28 Vikings 10
New England (-16 1/2, 51 1/2) at Miami 1:00 pm - Please. The line is too short, plus, Miami just traded their best receiver, Chris Chambers, to San Diego. Miami is 0-6. Make that 0-7.
Prediction: Patriots 45 Dolphins 0
Prediction: Giants 24 49ers 17
Tampa Bay at Detroit (-2 1/2, 44 1/2) 1:00 pm - Here is where the rubber meets the road. Detroit wants to throw the ball around and the Bucs want to pick off Jon Kitna and punish his flashy receivers. They should be able to do that on most occasions, but the real differential is when the Buccaneers have the ball against the porous Detroit defense. Only the Bengals are worse than the Lions, who are allowing 31 points per contest. And that makes this game NO CONTEST.
Prediction: Buccaneers 27 Lions 21
Tennessee (-1 1/2, 38 1/2) at Houston 1:00 pm - The Texans seem to have lost some of their swagger, having lost 3 of their last 4, though two of those losses were on the road and the other was a 2-point defeat at the hands of the Colts (Remember them? They beat everybody.) The Titans, meanwhile are wondering whether Kerry Collins or Vince Young will start at QB. Young sat out the latter stages of last week's loss at Tampa Bay with a pulled quad. He is day-to-day. The Titans won both of these games last season, but Houston's playing much better this year, especially on offense. This one's a toss-up, and the edge goes to the home team.
Prediction: Texans 17 Titans 16
