Sunday, Oct. 21
Kansas City at Oakland (-2 1/2, 37) 4:05 pm - The face of the AFC West has changed a bit from last season. Instead of the Chargers dominating, the Chiefs are tied with them at 3-3, with Oakland and Denver at 2-3. While the Raiders were losing at Oakland, the Chiefs were kicking some Cincy butt last Sunday. That will continue, as KC finds new life and maybe a little Priest Holmes on offense.
Prediction: Chiefs 20 Raiders 14
N.Y. Jets at Cincinnati (-6, 47) 4:05 pm - Can things get any worse for the 1-4 Bengals? Well, this game could be on the road... actually, that might be better for Ocho Cinco and his gang of felons. The Jets are pretty bad, but maybe Chad Pennington will get hurt and a real quarterback may come in and make some plays. Or the coaching staff might remember they have Thomas Jones in the lineup. Since one of those two things is likely to happen, the Jets and the points look pretty good here in an ugly, ugly game.
Prediction: Jets 27 Bengals 24
Chicago at Philadelphia (-5, 41) 4:15 pm - Philly just got past the Jets last week and weren't very impressive. Maybe at home they'll play better. But speaking of unimpressive, how about that Chicago defense? These are two teams looking at the playoffs from the outside right now, but the Bears need this one badly and will find a way to win. Brian Griese will be the unlikely hero. You heard it here first.
Prediction: Bears 21 Eagles 14
Prediction: Seahawks 27 Rams 21
Pittsburgh (-3 1/2, 39) at Denver 8:15 pm - The Steelers are good. Really good. Good enough to be 3 1/2-point favorites in Denver. That's pretty good. They'll treat their fans to their usual blend of tough defense, tricky offense and solid special teams play. Denver is toast this season.
Prediction: Steelers 33 Broncos 20
Monday, Oct. 22
Indianapolis (-3, 44 1/2) at Jacksonville 8:30 pm - Indy may prove to be unbeatable, but don't tell that to the Jaguars, who always play them tough, but usually come out on the short end of the score. Last season, however, the Jags won 44-17 in Jacksonville nearing the end of the season. The Colts were coming off a loss at Tennessee and were on the road for the second straight week. This year, they come in off a bye, well-rested and undefeated. Jacksonville has won four straight, though, and rather handily. They are prepared for whatever Peyton manning throws their way.
Prediction: Jaguars 31 Colts 28
Open date: Carolina, Cleveland, Green Bay, San Diego
