Sunday, Oct. 28
Buffalo at N.Y. Jets (-3, 37) 4:05 pm - The Jets are only favored because they're at home. Buffalo is playing much better than people want to believe. If they can get the ball downfield a couple of times, they'll make a shambles of New York's suspect defense. The Jets are sticking with Chad Pennington at QB, and that's a mistake. Jets lose.
Prediction: Bills 24 Jets 17
Houston at San Diego (-9, 45) 4:05 pm - The Chargers come into the game amid a very disrupted week of practice. On paper, they are a better team than the Texans, but not so much that they can come into a game and win without a solid game plan and productive practices. Besides that, Norv Turner has proven once again that he can take good team and make it worse. Houston may not win the game outright, but they will keep it close enough to cover the overly generous line, and obviously one which is a sucker bet for SoCal sympathizers. Yes, there has been a great deal of destruction and damage in Southern California, and we all sympathize with the people whose homes have been destroyed by the wildfires. But this is football and has nothing to do with events outside the lines.
Prediction: Chargers 27 Texans 24
Jacksonville at Tampa Bay (-3 1/2, 32) 4:05 pm - Without QB David Garrard, the Jaguars are probably going to be submerged by the Buccaneers, who are still smarting after last week's tough road loss at Detroit. This will be the meanest, hardest-hitting game of the week, as both teams have rugged defenses and not much going for them in the way of downfield threats. The Bucs will get a win and might even cover the spread.
Prediction: Buccaneers 16 Jaguars 10
Prediction: Saints 28 49ers 10
Washington at New England (-16 1/2, 47 1/2) 4:15 pm - Sooner or later, the Patriots are going to have a close call. Washington has the best defense the Patriots have seen all season, so this might as well be the week. If the Redskins can keep the ball out of Brady's hands for a while by running Clinton Portis and controlling the clock, they might even pull off the biggest upset of the season. If they can stay within 10 points and keep the Pats under 31, that should be good enough.
Prediction: Patriots 28 Redskins 17
Monday, Oct. 29
Green Bay at Denver (-3, 41) 8:30 pm - The Broncos found new life against, of all people, the dreaded Steelers, last week. Denver still doesn't have much of a pass defense, which means Brett Favre will have his way in the rarefied air. The Broncos are home for the second straight week, a serious positive, and may have corner Champ Bailey back for this one. If Bailey's in, he'll give the team a needed lift on defense.
Prediction: Broncos 28 Packers 21
Open date: Arizona, Atlanta, Baltimore, Dallas, Kansas City, Seattle
