NOTES: A couple of shockers took Clemson (a Top 10 preseason pick) and Virginia Tech down a number of notches. The Hokies, losers at East Carolina, 27-20, were kicked right out of the Top 25 as they were low-ranked preseason. Clemson, which looked like they hadn't prepared at all, were completely outclassed by a hungry and young Alabama team, dropping the opener in the Georgia Dome, 34-10. The Tigers dropped all the way down to #23 and will have to prove their mettle in weeks to come.

The only other team with a loss after the opening week is Illinois, after losing to Missouri for the second straight year, 52-42. The Illini may still turn out to be the class of the Big 10, so their drop to #16 is not surprising nor indicative of the real potential of that team.

Penn State rolled past Coastal Carolina, 66-10, looking mighty impressive.
