Week 10 Notes:

Texas Tech Vaults to the Top

Alabama shut out Arkansas St., 35-0, USC recorded their third shutout in the last four weeks, topping Washington, 56-0, and while Alabama did not lose their #2 spot in the rankings, USC dropped from #4 to #6.

All of this shuffling in the higher reaches of the Top 25 rankings was because the Red Raiders of Texas Tech knocked off #1 Texas, 39-33 on Saturday night and vaulted from #7 to #1. The Longhorns dropped to #5 while Florida was upgraded from #8 to #4 by virtue of their 49-10 dismantling of Georgia, earlier in the day.

The only other team to maintain their position from the week prior was idle 9-0 Penn State, remaining at #3.

While the Downtown Magazine rankings are unofficial in any capacity, they do mirror the BCS rankings to a degree, which has Alabama in the #1 spot, followed by Texas Tech and Penn State, putting the Nittany Lions and the BCS in an odd spot. It could occur that Penn State finishes their Big Ten and regular season without a loss, but still has no spot in a national championship game.

The entire scenario cries out for a playoff system, something Downtown Magazine and and slew of college football writers have been proposing for years.

Of course, there are still games to be played, and Alabama could still lose a game on the way to the SEC championship (most likely with Florida), while Tech could lose more than one. They face Oklahoma State next week and then play at Oklahoma on November 22. If they do manage to win the Big 12 South, the most probable matchup for the conference title would be against Missouri.

Alabama still has a date at LSU this Saturday, and their annual revival of the Iron Bowl, with Auburn visiting on November 29. They have the best chance of making it to the SEC title game without a loss, though Florida, which has just a 1-point loss to Mississippi marring their record, would probably be a 6-point favorite in such a matchup.

In the end, Penn State, which has only three games remaining - at Iowa (this weekend) and finishing up with two home games, against Indiana and Michigan State - may not even be undefeated by the finish of the Big 12 schedule. Iowa will be a real test, and Michigan State could upset.

It gets more interesting every week.
