NCAA College Football Top 25 - Week 14
Rick Gagliano | Through games of November 29, 2008
--- Week 14 Notes below ---
Oregon State blew their opportunity to receive an automatic BCS bid when they were hammered by in-state rival Oregon, 65-38, Saturday night. Not only did the Beavers toss the PAC-10 championship, they handed it to USC, which has only to knock off crosstown rival, UCLA, to win the conference and face Penn State in the Rose Bowl.
Other games of interest saw Missouri lose to Kansas in a wild shootout, 40-37, while Georgia Tech was topping the Bulldogs of Georgia by even more insane score, 45-42.
With Championship week looming, these games were less consequential than, say, Virginia Tech's 17-14 win over Virginia, which clinched the ACC Coastal and sets up a matchup between the Hokies and Boston College - winners of the ACC Atlantic division with their 28-21 win over Maryland - this coming weekend.
In the most overly-hyped, falsely-critical game of the season, Oklahoma out-slugged the Cowboys of Oklahoma State, 61-41, earning them a trip to Kansas City for the Big 12 Championship this weekend. Since the BCS standings determined the winner of the Big 12 South after the Sooners, Texas Longhorns and Texas Tech Red Raiders all beat each other during the regular season and ended up tied at 11-1, the Sooners will go on to play Missouri for the conference title, even though Texas beat them on a neutral site during the regular season.
If that's what college football wants, a make believe national championship between the winners of the Big 12 and SEC, then they can have it. Texas caught a raw deal. The winner of the SEC championship on Saturday between Florida and Alabama should emerge as one half of the "national championship game" lineup, with Oklahoma as the opponent.
The BCS has once more proven so fatally flawed that it's uncertain whether the two best teams in the nation will actually be competing for #1. While the winner of the Orange Bowl looks to be Alabama, Florida or Oklahoma, teams from Texas, Penn State and USC - and to a lesser extent, Utah and Boise State - will likely end their seasons harboring legitimate gripes.
