--- Week 15 Notes below ---

Week 15 Notes:

The BCS is undeniably an imperfect system, allowing no wiggle room outside of the two teams which will vie for the national championship. Now that it's all been sewn up (again) and bowl contestants chosen by the BCS computers and committee, we here at Downtown Magazine voice our disagreement (again). Florida is deserving of the top spot in the polls - all of them - though after that, it gets a bit dicey. Texas did beat the Oklahoma Sooners, square and fair, and on a neutral site, 55-45. Penn State suffered just one road loss all season, as did USC and Texas Tech. Alabama did the best they could, but came up short against the Gators in the SEC title game last week, and, of course, what to do with Boise State and Utah, the remaining undefeated teams in the Bowl division?

With the bowl pairings set, it appears that once again the smaller conferences got the short end of the kicking tee. What's even worse is that the BCS committee must still be removing egg from their collective faces in the aftermath of Boise State's thriller over Oklahoma two years ago. That was one of the greatest, most memorable games ever played, yet the BCS crew decided against giving Boise another dance in the limelight, opting for a Texas - Ohio State bore-fest.

That is a game that most college football fans could care less about. All that can come from it is a big Texas win, fueling speculation that the Longhorns should have been playing Florida for all the marbles. Would Oklahoma Bob Stoops have complained about a rematch with Boise? At least that would have had some intrigue, but the BCS cannot be bothered to consider the the fans. Hey, there's money at stake. If the Sooners don't beat the Gators, they may well end the current version of Ohio State, with the can't win the big one moniker hung around their necks.

The Virginia Tech - Cincinnati Orange Bowl is another non-watcher, and maybe that Alabama (has there ever been as uninspiring a top 10 team?) - Utah game will be something special, but somehow, seeing Boise State matched up with TCU in the Poinsettia Bowl and Florida hammering Oklahoma in the "national championship" game just doesn't get the juices flowing. With any luck, not only will Texas score 60 on Ohio State, but the Nittany Lions will completely outclass USC (really, just how bad is USC QB Mark Sanchez, anyhow?) and there will be more than one team complaining. The Longhorns and Penn State have legitimate gripes here. Nobody is undefeated and all both Texas and Penn State lost road games.

The BCS? It's time to get rid of it once and for all and at least institute a 4-8 team playoff system. If Florida, Penn State, Texas and Oklahoma were to draw straws and play each other, with the winners playing for all the dice, I'd buy into that. But, as we have it, the national championship game contestants are chosen for us, rather than having to earn it on the field. Not a happy ending.
