Week 3 Notes:

Southern Cal ascended to the top of the college football ladder with a punishing 35-3 triumph over Ohio State. The Trojans look like one of maybe three or four teams capable going through the rest of the season without a loss.

Noting that, the other teams on the radar are Oklahoma, which advanced into the #2 position by toppling Washington, 55-14, though the Sooners still have Colorado, Texas, Missouri and Texas Tech on the schedule. None of those teams have yet to be beaten, but it's still very early in the season.

Missouri caught everyone's attention with a 69-17 win over a pretty good Nevada team. So too, BYU's 49-0 thumping of UCLA was the Bruins' worse loss in over 80 years.

Over in the SEC, the best conference - top to bottom - in the country, they still play defense. Georgia survived a trip to South Carolina with a 14-7 win, while Auburn held on at home for a 3-2 win over resolute Mississippi State.

The weekend began on Friday night with South Florida topping Kansas in a wild one, 37-34, and ended with Arizona State being upset by those rebellious Rebels from UNLV, 23-20 in overtime.
