--- Week 1 Notes below ---

Week 5 Notes:

Beginning with Oregon State's stunning 27-21 victory over #1 USC, Week 5 of the 2008 NCAA football season will go down in history as one of the more upsetting of all time. No less than nine teams in Downtown Magazine's Top 25 rankings suffered defeat, including four in the top 10.

Along with the Trojans, Week 4 Top Ten teams Georgia, Florida and Wisconsin also suffered their first defeats of the season. Consequently, none of those are ranked higher than #11.

Moving far up the ladder were Penn State and Alabama, which ascended into the #2 and #3 positions behind Oklahoma. #4 Missouri was idle.

The quality of the wins by the top three were the main determinants in the rankings. Oklahoma easily handled TCU, 35-10, while Alabama knocked off former #2 Georgia, 41-30 and Penn State held off a high-quality squad from Illinois, 38-24.

The real sleepers in the mix include #6 BYU, #7 South Florida, #8 Texas and #10 Utah and #13 Connecticut, all undefeated.

There are now 14 teams without a loss, which also includes Texas Tech, Boise St., Vanderbilt and unranked Northwestern (5-0).

One loss may look OK now, but the longer some of these teams go through the season without suffering defeat, the better they look and the tougher it becomes to rank any team without looking over one's shoulder at the next upset to come.
