--- Week 1 Notes below ---
Week 6 Notes: As opposed to the fallout from last week, the just-concluded week of college games saw relatively little movement in the Top 10, with just one upset - that to previously-ranked #7 South Florida, who lost at home to Pittsburgh, 28-21 - but it was devastating on a number of fronts. First, South Florida no longer looks like the team to beat in the Big East. That honor now rests on Cincinnati, which improved to 4-1 and leap-frogged past the Bulls into the #17 spot. Second, the Bulls loss was exacerbated by Kansas' 35-33 great escape at Iowa State. Since South Florida's ranking was due, in large part, to their earlier razor-thin home win over the Jayhawks earlier in the season, Kansas' close call weakened the overall quality view. Thus, South Florida fell all the way to #24, followed by Kansas at #25.
While the Top 10 was relatively unscathed, there was plenty of movement below. Connecticut, Auburn, Wisconsin, Maryland, Fresno St. and Oregon all fell out of the Top 25. All but Connecticut suffered their second losses of the season. UConn, despite being 5-1, put in a poor performance against North Carolina, losing 38-12. The Tar Heels enter the Week 6 rankings at #18. Also from the ACC is the reappearing Virginia Tech at #16, and Florida St. at #21. Other teams entering the fray are 5-0 Oklahoma State (#19), 4-1 Cal (#20) and 4-1 Pittsburgh (#22).
A dual odyssey from the Big 10 is emerging as Illinois just missed making the rankings with their powerful win at Michigan, but their 3-2 record kept them just on the outside. Northwestern is 5-0, but isn't getting any love in any of the major polls - nor here - due to the overall lightweights they've played thus far.
