--- Week 1 Notes below ---

Week 8 Notes:

Texas earned the #1 ranking by absolutely dominating Missouri, so much so that the Tigers were bounced all the way out of the Top 25, along with fellow Big 12 constituent, Kansas, which suffered its second loss of the season at Oklahoma, by a 45-31 score. The Longhorns' 56-31 devastation of Missouri included one of the more dominant first half performances of the season, which saw the score at half time a 35-3 margin in favor of Texas.

USC also made a bit of noise, with its 69-0 slaughter of Washington State. The Trojans finally displayed the kind of defense everybody thought they had, holding the Cougars to 28 yards passing and 116 yards total offense. The USC offense totaled 625 yards and got USC back to #4 in the Downtown Magazine Top 25.

A spate of teams lost for the second time this season, all of which were booted out of the Top 25 rankings, including the aforementioned Missouri and Kansas, along with Michigan State, Connecticut, North Carolina, Wake Forest, Cal, Virginia Tech and Vanderbilt. The only team with two losses to reach the rankings was Arizona, which took over #25 after defeating Cal. The Wildcats have a date with USC this weekend, so, unless they win or come close, they too may be gone at this time next week.

TCU also got into the rankings at #15, after knocking off BYU on Thursday night by a 32-7 score, knocking the Cougars all the way down from #6 last week, to #21 this week.

All undefeated teams are now represented in the rankings, as Tulsa and Ball State were included, at #19 and #23, respectively. There are now 9 teams without a loss and 16 with one loss. Only Northwestern (6-1) did not make the grade of teams with one loss.
