Fearless Rick's College Football Week 10 Picks - Late Games

Rick Gagliano | November 1-2, 2008

All times Eastern - Click here for early games.

3:30 pm Florida State at Georgia Tech (-1 1/2, N/A) - Here's a matchup for not just bragging rights but a chance to remain tied for first place in the ACC Coastal division (with Maryland) if Florida State makes their effort a winning one. The Seminoles have done everything right this season except losing at home to Wake Forest back in September and they can improve to 7-1 with a win. Their usually-strong defense has been under siege lately, surrendering 97 points in their last four games, but when they play to their potential, they can shut down nearly any offense.

Georgia Tech has relied primarily on their defense to get to their 6-2 record and lost last week by a TD to a revitalized Virginia squad after winning four straight. They now trail the Cavaliers by 1/2 game in the ACC Coastal division. Though it's too early to count anyone in or out, a home loss would really make life tough for the Yellow Jackets as they have North Carolina, Miami and Georgia remaining to play. Tough call in what should be an excellent game to watch, the Seminoles have the offensive firepower to prevail.

Prediction: Seminoles 21 Yellow Jackets 13

3:30 pm Florida (-5 1/2, N/A) at Georgia (at Jacksonville) - Kind of surprised at the line here, especially with the Bulldogs playing in Jacksonville where they won 42-30 last season and sporting the exact same conference record (4-1) as the Gators. Georgia is 7-1 overall to the Gators' season record of 6-1. The winner here likely will go to the SEC Championship game on December 6 as the representative of the SEC East (right now the West belongs to Alabama though that could change), so it is a huge deal.

The Gators hold statistical advantage on both offense and defense, scoring at 42 points per game while allowing just 11.9. Georgia checks in at 34.3 and 20.3. Despite those numbers, this line looks suspiciously like a Las Vegas sucker bet. Everybody knows Tim Tebow and the Gators, but the Georgia coaching staff takes a back seat to nobody. Florida may be the "designer" choice, but the Bulldogs have Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno on offense, and they're good enough to beat anyone.

Prediction: Bulldogs 27 Gators 24

8:00 pm TCU (-14, N/A) at UNLV - Before you toss your hard-earned money down on the Horned Frogs, consider that UNLV has already knocked off Arizona State and lost by just a TD last week at BYU. Also consider that they have lost by double digits to Utah, Nevada and Colorado State, but came within a point of beating Air Force, so this is a very unpredictable bunch.

On the other side of the ball, a predictable item in this game will be TCU's impressive defense. They are allowing just 10.4 ppg, second in the nation to USC, while the Runnin' Rebels give up an average of 33.9. That's a huge difference. TCU is also averaging 35.8 ppg, to UNLV's respectable 27.9. with the lead in the Mountain West, national ranking and a possible BCS berth at risk, the Horned Frogs should show up dressed to kill. And they probably will.

Prediction: Horned Frogs 48 Runnin' Rebels 21

8:00 Nebraska at Oklahoma (-21, N/A) - In another time, this was the biggest game of the year for both teams. The game's importance has been diminished of late due to problems within the Nebraska football program, but to the players and first year head coach Bo Pellini, this game carries more meaning. At 5-3, the Cornhuskers have only been outgunned once this season, when they were routed 52-17 at Missouri. The following week, they lost by just 6 points at Texas Tech and just prior to the Missouri game they lost to Virginia Tech, 35-30. So, while they lost all three games, they played well in two of them, and since have beaten Iowa State and Baylor handily. Since the 'Huskers are winning the games they should and losing those they're expected to lose, but covering, doesn't 21 points sound like a whole bunch? On offense, they can't keep up with Oklahoma's 48.3 ppg, but on defense, they are nearly the Sooners' equal.

Take the points and enjoy, especially if the Sooners take their border rivals lightly.

Prediction: Sooners 38 Cornhuskers 28

8:00 pm Texas (-6, N/A) at Texas Tech - For the third week out of the last four, the Longhorns face an undefeated team. First, they knocked down Oklahoma 45-35, on a neutral field. After mauling Missouri, 56-31, last week they slipped by Oklahoma State, 28-24 at home. This week they play the Red Raiders on the road. Beating four high-powered teams in consecutive weeks is asking a whole lot from any program, and if Texas can get past Tech this weekend, they deserve a shot at the national championship. Heck, even if they lose, they deserve a shot (we really do need a better system).

Now, one might think that the Red Raiders, given all the points they score, don't focus on defense. That would be a mistake, because Tech allows just 21.1 ppg, not far removed from the Longhorns' 18.4. The Red Raiders are also third nationally in scoring at 48 ppg, with Texas 5th, at 45.6. This has all the makings of a wild West shoot-em-up, with Tech prevailing at home and the national rankings taking another roller coaster ride.

Prediction: Red Raiders 41 Longhorns 38
