Fearless Rick's NFL Preseason Week 2 Picks - Late Games

Rick Gagliano | August 16-18

All times Eastern - Click here for early games.

SAT, AUG 16

Arizona at Kansas City (-3, 35) 8:00 PM Arrowhead Stadium - The Cardinals disappointed in their preseason home opener, and will be looking for a better performance from their defense, which allowed New Orleans to roll up nearly 400 yards of offense. Naturally, the Chiefs are not the Saints, so expect a better game from Arizona here.

The Cardinals' offense should lead the way to a win over the Chiefs despite being on the road. KC's defense really hasn't shown anything. Their 24-20 win over Chicago last week came on a late TD against 3rd stringers.

Prediction: Cardinals 28 Chiefs 14

Houston at New Orleans (-3, 36 1/2) 8:00 PM Superdome - Houston was a surprise last season and began 2008 with a 19-16 win over Denver last week and are expected to hang tough against the Saints, a team which has much more emphasis on offense rather than defense. However, being that this is the Saints first appearance of the season at home, one should expect the best from Brees, Bush, and a bevy of receivers looking for jobs.

New Orleans should get out ahead early and hold on late in a high-scoring affair.

Prediction: Saints 34 Texans 24

Dallas at Denver (-3, 37) 9:00 PM Invesco Field - The Cowboys fell short in their opener against San Diego, but that doesn't worry the Dallas faithful. Denver is clearly overmatched here and aren't likely to find much sympathy from the Cowboys. If any game looks like a complete rout, this is it.

Prediction: Cowboys 31 Broncos 10

Green Bay at San Francisco (-3, 34 1/2) 9:00 PM Monster Park - Green Bay is searching for identity and their first win in the post-Favre era. Even though it's still preseason, there's reason to believe that the entire team wants to get behind new starting QB Aaron Rodgers and put up a W. There's probably no better place to start winning than in San Fran, who were outclassed by their across-the-bay rivals, Oakland, last week, coughing up two fumbles and 2 INT in the process. The 49ers aren't playing good football, a big plus for the Packers.

Prediction: Green Bay 23 49ers 7

Chicago at Seattle (-2, 35) 9:00 PM Qwest Field - Seattle looked surprisingly fresh in their dominating 34-17 debut win over Minnesota. As a reward, they get to host the offense-challenged Bears in a walk-over kind of game. Why the Seahawks aren't favored by 6 or more is a good question unless the Bears have some secret plan that allows their quarterbacks to throw more accurately. Seattle should win this with relative ease.

Prediction: Seahawks 21 Bears 13

SUN, AUG 17

Detroit at Cincinnati (-3 1/2, 36 1/2) 7:35 PM Paul Brown Stadium - If you're seeking an OVER play, this one is tailor made. Both teams should find the end zone at least three times, such is the level of offensive talent - and lack of credible defense - on the field. As far as a winner is concerned, that extra 1/2 point may come in handy as a late field goal may decide this one.

Prediction: Lions 30 Bengals 27

New England at Tampa Bay (-2, 33 1/2) 8:00 PM NFL Raymond James Stadium - The Patriots and Bucs are both going to put plenty of emphasis on this game as a barometer of how each stacks up against playoff-likely opposition. The Bucs want to defend their home field, while the Patriots may be looking ahead, wanting to get the memory of the Super Bowl out of their heads. Winning this is probably of more importance to Jon Gruden than to Bill Belichick. Even though Gruden has a Super Bowl ring already, his rival has three. Who knows? We may be witness to a Super Bowl preview here. The Patriots are likely to have more weapons than the Bucs' defense can handle, though not by much.

Prediction: Patriots 17 Buccaneers 13

MON, AUG 18

Cleveland at NY Giants (-3, 35 1/2) 8:00 PM ESPN Giants Stadium - Cleveland has a nice team, but they lost to the Jets last week, so any idea that they are of the same caliber of the Giants is probably wishful thinking. New York is one of these sneaky-good teams that just executes and beats your brains in, while the Browns are a highlight reel in the raw. Cleveland will score, but not as often as the G-Men, who receive a heroes welcome at the Meadowlands.

Prediction: Giants 27 Browns 20
