Fearless Rick's NFL Week 7 Picks - Late Games

Rick Gagliano | October 19-20

All times Eastern - Click here for early games.

Detroit at Houston (-8 1/2, 47) 4:05 PM - The Lions are one of just two teams without a win. Houston won their first game last week, winning in the final seconds over Miami. A week earlier, they had the Colts on the ropes and let them escape, so the Texans are playing fairly good football, surely enough to get past the inept bunch from the Motor City. Not much to get excited about in Detroit.

Prediction: Texans 35 Lions 13

Indianapolis (-1 1/2, 47) at Green Bay 4:15 PM - The Colts seem to have figured out what they need to do to win their division and that's unleash their talented offense. Defensively, the Colts are more than adequate, allowing just 19.4 per game. Green Bay has floundered its way to a 3-3 record, good enough to tie for the lead in the NFC North, but they just seem to be a notch below Indy's high level of play.

Prediction: Colts 31 Packers 24

NY Jets (-3, 41 1/2) at Oakland 4:15 PM - Stick with Brett Favre, especially against the Raiders, who were humiliated at New Orleans last week, 34-3. Favre could probably hang 3 TDs on anyone with a bunch of college kids on his side, and against the inept Raiders, he may get some juicy field positions from which to launch toward the end zone.

The Jets don't have much of a defense, and that will keep the Raiders in this one for a while, but at the end of the third quarter the outcome will be pretty much obvious. This also looks like the easiest over play of the week.

Prediction: Jets 34 Raiders 22

--- Story continues below ---

Cleveland at Washington (-7, 42 1/2) 4:15 PM - Cleveland gave the Giants a bruising on Monday night, but they have to travel and the old bugaboo over playing road games after Monday nighters applies. Washington was stunned by the lowly Rams, who unexpectedly won their first game of the season in a 19-17 thriller. Cleveland may have discovered that they are a better team than their record and they also should make note of the schedule. They are again on the road at Jacksonville next week, making this game all the more important.

Since the Redskins haven't beaten anybody by more than 7 points, the dogs get the nod here, which should make some Cleveland fans happy.

Prediction: Browns 24 Redskins 20

Seattle at Tampa Bay (-10 1/2, 38) 8:15 PM - Originally, this game figured to be a battle of playoff contenders, but, given the woeful 1-4 start to the season by the Seahawks, only the Bucs are in a meaningful, competitive position, tied with Carolina and Atlanta in the NFC South.

The Bucs have a grinding, gritty team that thrives on defense, field position and possession time. Scoring more than 10 points shouldn't be a problem for them, and the defense is expected to bring the feeble Seattle offense to a halt. Should be easy for the brawny Bucs.

Prediction: Buccaneers 24 Seahawks 10

MON, OCT 20

Denver at New England (-3, 48) 8:30 PM - There's really a couple of issues which need to be addressed in this clash of AFC titans. First, New England QB Matt Cassell has to demonstrate more poise in the pocket and more accuracy in his throws. His performance in Sunday's thrashing at San Diego was horrible and the offense is suffering instead of flourishing. Randy Moss has 20 catches in 5 games - not bad - but he's accounted for just 300 yards of offense and 2 TDs, well below the blowout numbers of 2007.

For Denver, the defense must show some muscle and smarts. The Broncos have allowed more than 30 points in 3 different games this season. Amazingly, they've won two of them, but that kind of soft execution isn't going to lead to anything but a spate of losses, eventually.

The deal here is that even if the Patriots can put up 30 points (a questionable proposition), Denver will likely score 35 and that's how we'll call this one - a sloppy, high-scoring affair full of flubs, fumbles and fantasy highlights.

Prediction: Broncos 35 Patriots 30

Bye: Atlanta, Philadelphia, Arizona, Jacksonville
