NCAA College Football Top 25 - Week 1
Rick Gagliano | Through games of September 7, 2009
Winning football picks will help you beat the college football spreads and win more betting on football.
--- Week 1 Notes below ---
There was one major upset in college football's opening week, and it was huge. Three TD-underdog BYU crunched 2008 Heisman winner Sam Bradford and the Cougars held on for a stunning 14-13 win on the road. Oddly enough, the Oklahoma faithful seem to be more focused on getting to the national championship game than the other issues which reared their heads in their season-opening loss.
Even without Bradford, the Sooners should have been able to gallop to victory with their superb running backs - Chris Brown and DeMarco Murray - leading the way, but maybe the losses on the offensive line are more auspicious than previously believed. Oklahoma gained just 142 yards rushing on 31 carries, for a very un-Sooner-like 3.8 average. That's an interesting set of numbers that coaches around the Big 12 are likely not to miss. The Sooners seem vulnerable, even when Bradford returns.
Other standouts were Alabama, who cruised at Virginia Tech, 24-14, and Cincinnati, who piled on a very suspect Rutgers squad, 47-15. Speaking of suspect, Ohio State was absolutely outplayed by Navy, but came away with a win that the coaches know was undeserved. Hosting USC this coming Saturday is not a promising prospect.
Of course, the week could not be complete without controversy and it came on the very first day of the season, when Boise State flummoxed Oregon, 19-8, and the Ducks' running back, LeGarrette Blount punched Byron Fout after the latter did some taunting following the game.
Blount has been suspended for the season for the incident, ending his collegiate career. Fout, the instigator, received little to no punishment for his trash talk. The punishment for Blount was probably too severe, while Fout will play out his days at Boise without so much as a second thought. The whole thing seemed a little overblown, but these days, the spotlight shines fairly brightly on bad behavior.
The real story is how Boise just doesn't lose on that blue carpet, wearing blue uniforms. The games are even difficult to watch and it's an unfair advantage at least. Boise may cruise to another undefeated season, and despite the grousing about blue-on-blue, they have distinguished themselves as an outstanding college football program.
