--- Week 10 Notes below ---

Week 10 Notes:

By losing, two Top 10 teams made the task of assigning the first ten rankings in the college football universe a little easier, but at the same time, made discerning the make-up of #s 11-25 a more daunting task than anyone would imagine.

The two losing teams from week 10 were Iowa, of whom everybody in the college journalism ranks said would fail sooner or later, marking the very first time in which everybody - from the top TV analysts to lowly bloggers - was right. The Hawkeyes ran into trouble against Northwestern, a team which had already lost to Big Ten teams Penn St., Minnesota and Michigan St., so who could have believed that Iowa was to become their victim? Like it or not, the Hawkeyes were not the same team in the final three quarters as they were in the first, after they lost starting QB Ricky Stanzi.

Stanzi, tackled in the end zone early in the second quarter, fumbled, producing the first of two Northwestern TDs. Despite having to go the rest of the way with frosh QB James Vandenberg, the Hawkeyes still nearly won or tied the game, when a TD run by Brandon Wegher was called back on a holding call. The 17-10 loss was the first of the season for Iowa, ending a 13-game winning streak, the second longest in the nation.

The other losing Top 10 team was Oregon, whose 8-game win streak was foiled by the Stanford Cardinal, in a 51-42 shoot-out win by Stanford. Oregon had come off a thumping of USC and claimed the top spot in the PAC-10, only to go down to defeat the following week. It was a stunning turnaround for a team that was being touted as a possible national championship contender. Just to even the score, all of the college football journalists were dead wrong about the Ducks.

Winning football picks will help you beat the college football spreads and win more betting on football.

Compiling the rankngs here at Downtown Magazine didn't get any easier, though, considering that Houston won by a point over Tulsa, Georgia Tech was taken into overtime to beat Wake Forest, Cincinnati had a fight to the finish to slip past UConn, and Ohio State punched out Penn State in Happy Valley (well, some of us knew that was going to happen).

At least the top 3 teams were all winners. Alabama beat LSU by 9, Texas hammered UCF, 35-3, and Florida whipped Vanderbilt, 27-3. The only thing we here at DT and the BCS agree upon is that Texas is #2. Those geniuses have Florida #1 and Alabama #3, while we have those two reversed.

The biggest surprise of the week was Pitt moving all the way up to #8, which makes for an interesting final three weeks to their season - home against Notre Dame, at West Virginia and hosting Cincinnati in the season finale.

The rest of the Top 25 includes a couple of returnees - Navy and Auburn - and an assortment of 2 and 3-loss teams. From 8-25 is pretty much a crap shoot at this point. It's easily imaginable that #24 Stanford could beat #10 Houston, for instance. Anyone for a playoff system?
