--- Week 11 Notes below ---

Week 11 Notes:

The truth about the Top 25 - either these Downtown Magazine rankings, the AP Coaches Poll, the BCS, or even computer rankings - is that they are all subjective. These may or may not be the best teams, in order, at any given time, but, without the aid of a playoff system, wins, losses, stats and empirical data - that which we can see, hear, touch - are the criteria with which teams are eventually ranked.

Some of the comparisons are easy to make. Florida, for instance, while favored in the major polls and by the BCS, is not of the same quality they were a year ago, that has been obvious all season long. They are still a high-quality team that deserves a high ranking, but the comparisons to Alabama are telling, especially when it comes down to comparing similar opponents. The two have played the same teams four times: LSU, Tennessee, South Carolina, Arkansas and Mississippi State. The winning margins by Florida have been: 10, 10, 10, 3, 10. Alabama: 9, 2, 14, 28, 28. Taking home field and weather out of the equation, simple math, totaling the winning margins gives Alabama a huge edge: 81-43, and that's good enough to make them #1.

As far as the remainder of the SEC is concerned, it seems to be a somewhat down year in the conference, once one gets past the top 3 teams. The Big East or ACC actually appear to have the same number of quality teams or more, and the PAC-10 may be the best conference of all, despite USC not really showing up. Oregon, Stanford and Oregon State have accounted well for themselves. Realistically, USC doesn't even make the Top 30, which is why we tried to push down Ohio State as much as possible. We don't really believe the Buckeyes are good enough to beat a lot of teams ranked below them, like Oregon State, BYU or Rutgers.

Winning football picks will help you beat the college football spreads and win more betting on football.

Also, Pitt, at #8, may or may not belong there, though there's really no way to tell. Once they play Cincinnati, there will be a better standard for both of those teams. The Bearcats lost a spot after nearly being upset by West Virginia, a team that continues to improve. Cincinnati has a real Achilles' Heel in their defense. That group is not very good and nowhere near the caliber of those of the teams directly ahead of them.

Stanford may be the best team in the nation right now, but, because they have three losses, we'll only be able to spot them against inferior opponents the rest of the year. The teams which really belong in a playoff system right now are Florida, Texas, Alabama, Stanford, Cincinnati, TCU, Boise State and Georgia Tech.

Wow! That's 8 teams. It would take 3 weeks and just 7 games to determine which of these teams is really #1 in a single elimination playoff. How difficult could that be?
