--- Week 13 Notes below ---

Week 13 Notes:

When the teams ranked 7-10 all suffer losses, you know that college football is as competitive as it can ever be, and that rankings mean little to nothing, just opinions. Additionally, when the team ranked #25 - in this case the Houston Cougars - puts up 73 points (beating Rice, 73-14), you have to believe that there is quality up and down the rankings.

The losses by Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh, Oklahoma State and Clemson made even the BCS look a little silly this weekend, such is the matter with any standard wishing to put artificial weightings on teams when the only true measure is on the field of play.

Finding some justification in the entire mess is Nebraska moving up to #8 on the Downtown Magazine Top 25, and, from off the charts completely, to #21 in the BCS. The idea that the outright winner of the Big 12 North would not be worthy of a BCS ranking - as of last week - shows how flawed that - and by inference, any - system really is.

Winning football picks will help you beat the college football spreads and win more betting on football.

The Obvious questions which arise from such a spate of upsets in one of the closing weeks of the college season, is just how good are teams with poor records, like 7-5 South Carolina, Arkansas and Oklahoma, Air Force and even a team with an 8-4 record, such as Nevada, which lost on enemy turf to Boise State, but by just 11 points.

One - Boise State - goes to a major BCS bowl. The other - Nevada - goes to the Emerald Bowl, or, more likely, the Las Vegas Bowl.

The biggest drop was by Oklahoma State, which fell completely off our top 25, and down to #22 in the BCS, where noise and fury was being made last week about the Cowboys getting into a BCS bowl. Now that they were collectively handed their 10-gallon hats by the Sooners in a 27-0 romp, they are exposed as pretenders and relegated to minor post-season seeding.

Rightfully, two of the schools from small conferences will get BCS bids. Both TCU and Boise State ran their respective tables. A match-up between those two unbeaten teams would be an interesting prospect, but the BCS brain trust will more than likely opt to have them split up and play against Cincinnati and the loser of either the ACC or SEC Championship.

There's just one more week of ranking madness ahead before 4 weeks of bowl games and the final tally, which, of course, will solve nothing.

But, hey, it's fun trying.
