Week 14 Notes:

Alabama Affirms Downtown Magazine #1 Ranking

Winning football picks will help you beat the college football spreads and win more betting on football.

Since Week 7, Downtown Magazine has ranked Alabama as the #1 team in the nation, and on Saturday in the Georgia Dome, they affirmed themselves as the best team in the country, and it wasn't even close.

Florida, considered the best by most of the other ranking systems, including the horribly flawed BCS, failed to take into account the lighter schedule and smaller margins of victory by the Gators in 2009. Surely, they are a worthy opponent, but they were simply outclassed, outcoached and outplayed by the Crimson Tide in the 32-13 SEC Championship slaughter.

Not only did Alabama nearly completely shut down the Florida offense, holding them to their lowest scoring total in four years (LSU held them to 13 in a losing effort earlier this season), it was also the largest losing margin for the Gators since they were beaten on October 1, 2005 by - guess who? - that's right, ALABAMA, 31-3.

The Tide rolled with such efficiency on offense, they amassed double the first downs that Florida had (26-13), held the ball for nearly twice as long, and rolled up 490 total yards, including 251 rushing. The Crimson Tide could not be stopped.

After witnessing what, for all intents and purposes, was the national championship, because Texas won't stay on the field against Alabama and the BCS won't allow either Boise State nor TCU to match up with the might Tide, the remainder of the college football season might as well be forgotten. Sure there will be plenty of hype preceding the "national championship" game between Alabama and Texas, but, unless injuries or some other absurd event occurs, for the most ardent fans, Alabama already is the champion.

Texas didn't do itself any favors by being mauled for 59 minutes and 59 seconds by Nebraska, then lucking into the win after nearly throwing the game away by not watching the clock, and the Cincinnati Bearcats out of the Big East won by virtue of a missed Pittsburgh extra point. Besides, Cincy has no defense of which to speak; Florida will probably devour them in the Sugar Bowl.

No, the BCS has finally dropped the ball on both feet. There will be more than one undefeated team this season, and, had they drawn the bowls properly (putting TCU and Boise into the same bowl game is a slap in the face of both the Mountain West and Western Athletic conferences), there may have been as many as four.

But the BCS has proven, once again, to be the most cowardly and profit-motivated sporting organization in America, repeatedly setting its agenda to promote the major conferences at the expense of all others and, what's even worse, the fans.

Maybe if the ratings for the BCS Bowls are down in comparison to prior years they'll get the message, but don't count on it. Alabama's Number One, unless, of course, the BCS decides it should be Texas.
