--- Week 2 Notes below ---

Week 2 Notes:

Another major upset knocked the second high-profile team from Oklahoma out of the Top Ten this past week. Oklahoma State was beaten by a motivated Houston Cougars team that refused to lose, topping the Cowboys by a 45-35 score. After the Cowboys had rallied to 28-24 lead with 21 3rd quarter points, the Houston squad scored 21 in the 4th quarter to seal the deal. It's the third time this season - in just two weeks - that a major conference school has been topped by a minor conference. BYU did it to Oklahoma and Boise St. bettered Oregon in week 1.

Another major conference school to feel the bite of minor conference defeat was Michigan State, beaten 29-27 by the Central Michigan Chippewas out of the Mid-American Conference. While the Chips will do fine versus their smaller conference rivals, the same cannot be assumed for the Spartans, who travel to Notre Dame on Saturday.

Speaking of the Fighting Irish, they were smitten in a familiar place - the Big House - by arch-rival Michigan, as freshman QB Tate Forcier rallied the Wolverines to a thrilling 38-34 victory on a TD pass to Senior WR Greg Mathews with just seconds remaining. The sparkling play of the Wolverines moved them back into the national Top 25 (and Downtown Magazine's rankings) after an absence of more than a year.

Winning football picks will help you beat the college football spreads and win more betting on football.

Another freshman, Matt Barkley of USC, led a similar comeback with a late 4th quarter drive that put the Trojans over the top at Ohio State. USC was behind most of the game, but the Buckeyes repeatedly could not move the ball in the second half and finally USC took the initiative, scoring a TD and two-point conversion for the 18-15 win. The hype surrounding the game proved to be over the top, especially in regards to Buckeye QB Tyrelle Pryor, who was being compared to Texas' Vince Young of 2005. In his biggest test to date, Pryor failed miserably, losing the game with a sub-par effort, going 11-of-25 through the air with a pick, and rushing for just 36 yards on 10 carries. Vince Young he certainly is NOT, and Ohio State, while they possess a very solid defense, lacks the offensive thrust to carry them through the Big Ten season without another loss. They look just a little better than ordinary.

The Trojans are now poised to make a run at their Pac-10 opponents, which begins at Washington this weekend. Their big game comes October 3, when they travel up to Berkeley to take on the Cal Bears, but they'd best be advised not to overlook the Huskies, who have found offensive life with the re-emergence of QB Jake Locker.

The remainder of the Top Ten finished out the week unscathed, as Florida, Texas, Penn St., Alabama, Mississippi, Cincinnati and Boise St. all won handily over second-rate opposition. BYU had the week off and remained at 1-0. South Carolina, Missouri and Notre Dame dropped out of the Top 25 rankings, replaced by Kansas, Pitt and Michigan.
