2009 NCAA College Football Top 25 - Week 4
Rick Gagliano | Through games of September 26, 2009
--- Week 4 Notes below ---
Eight teams in the Top 25 took losses over the weekend - three of them by teams already in the rankings - Penn St. lost to Iowa; Miami to Virginia Tech; and Florida State was dropped by South Florida. The others were Mississippi, Cal, North Carolina, Pittsburgh and Washington.
Of those losing teams, five - N. Carolina, Pitt, Florida St., Miami and Washington dropped out of the rankings, proving once again that nobody really knows which teams are the best until they actually play each other.
Winning football picks will help you beat the college football spreads and win more betting on football.
Noting that, Florida, Texas, Alabama all won big again, as did #4 Boise State. The Broncos are on their way to a perfect season, and, given the proper breaks, could actually play for the national championship. Their offense is potent enough to keep them in games with any other college school and their defense is adequate, which is about all that can be said for most college programs this year.
The Broncos rank 7th in scoring offense after blistering Bowling Green, 49-14.
Reluctantly, Cincinnati and LSU were appointed the #5 and #6 spots, respectively. LSU had its own problems with a suspect Mississippi St. team, though winning, 30-26, on the road in one of the nation's toughest conferences, does lend them some credibility. However, the next two games up for the Tigers are at Georgia and hosting Florida. The indication is that the Bulldogs may be the better team following their gutsy 20-17 win over Arizona State.
Cincinnati had little trouble getting past a very good offensive team in Fresno State. Though they won the game by 8, 28-20, the Bearcats moved the ball with proficiency in the first half, but were not nearly as threatening in the second, though the defense did step up with a number of good plays. Cincy's defense may be good enough to get them through the Big East unscathed, but that's also an iffy proposition.
West Virginia moves into the #7 slot, as their manhandling of Miami proved they were worthy of being the highest-ranked ACC team.
New to the rankings this week are South Carolina, Wisconsin and Houston, which cemented its position by beating the second Big 12 team in as many games - Texas Tech. With a win already in the books over Oklahoma State, how does the possibility of a Boise St. - Houston BCS Game sound? Obviously, it would not be for the national championship, but at least for #2 or 3.
