NCAA College Football Top 25 - Week 5
Rick Gagliano | Through games of October 3, 2009
--- Week 5 Notes below ---
More upsets - if we can call them that, since they occur with such alarming regularity - took place over the past weekend, highlighted by Miami re-emerging into the Top 25 with a walloping win over highly-overrated Oklahoma (believe it or not, these underachievers are still ranked in most polls despite a 2-2 record). Maybe the Miami win should not have been unexpected. After a rain-soaked loss at Virginia Tech - usually a very tough place to play even when the field isn't an absolute quagmire - the Hurricanes looked every bit a potential BCS team back on their dry, home turf.
A number of teams continue to fly under the radar with undefeated records. At 5-0, there is Iowa, Wisconsin, South Florida and Auburn. At 4-0, the Mountain West leader, TCU, and Kansas and Missouri out of the Big 12. There are now 12 teams that remain unbeaten, though one less is a certainty this coming week as Florida visits LSU.
Winning football picks will help you beat the college football spreads and win more betting on football.
Falling out of the rankings this week were Michigan and Pitt, though both are 4-1, along with Oklahoma, Cal, Georgia and Houston. Any of these teams could esily rebound back into the rankings in coming weeks, especially Georgia and Houston, which is likely to score big wins. Georgia plays at Tennessee, a very tough road game, and a win there would certainly boost their chances, but Houston, after stumbling badly against UTEP, has a big test at Mississippi State. A win there would re-confirm that they belong.
Michigan plays at Iowa, and that's about as big as it gets in the Big 10. A win by the Hawkeyes could put them further in the spotlight where they belong. The Hawkeyes are not the flashiest team in the country, but they may be the best coached.
Last word goes to Notre Dame, which made its way back into the rankings at #24, The Fighting Irish have earned their nickname in recent weeks, battling back late in games to win close calls, the latest, a 37-30 win over the Washington Huskies. Their previous two wins - over Michigan St. and Purdue - came by 3 points apiece. Their only loss was by the same margin - 3 points - and since they play a tough schedule, must be considered one of the top teams in the nation, despite the skepticism from the major polls.
