Contenders and Pretenders
The top three teams in Downtown Magazine's Top 25 rankings continued to prove their mettle, as Florida, Texas and Alabama handled stiff conference challenges. The Gators took a 13-3 decision in one of the toughest places to play in the nation, LSU's infamous "Swamp." QB Tim Tebow managed to be just good enough to slip the Gators past a very worthy opponent and remain unbeaten at 5-0.
Texas continued to roll, despite trailing early on against Colorado, winning going away, 38-14, with 28 second half points. The most impressive win of all, however, belonged to the Crimson Tide, who manhandled Mississippi, 22-3, on the Rebels' home field. The lopsided win was the 6th straight this season for Alabama, which plays at home against an excellent South Carolina defensive team this coming weekend.
The spate of upsets seemed to decline noticeably in Week 6. Besides LSU, the only team in Downtown Magazine's Top 25 Rankings to suffer a loss was Auburn, which was demolished at Arkansas, 44-23. They're one of the pretenders. Contenders include Notre Dame, Iowa and Pitt, all of which slipped by solid opponents and deserve their rankings.
Ohio State was the luckiest winner of all, returning two interceptions for touchdowns and getting a 96 yard kickoff return in their 31-13 win over Wisconsin. The Buckeyes were completely outplayed by the Badgers and appear very vulnerable.
