Week 7 Notes:

In week 7, it was determined that the Alabama Crimson Tide were deserving of the top ranking, dropping Florida to 3rd place, as Texas stayed at #2.

The reasons for the change had a good deal to do with how each team won, and the talent level of the competition.

In 4 SEC games, the Gators have won by an average margin of 14.25, while the Crimson Tide has averaged a 19.75 point per game margin of victory. The two have played two of the same opponents: Arkansas and Kentucky. Alabama beat Kentucky 38-20 (away) and Arkansas 35-7 (home). Florida topped Kentucky 41-7 (away) and Arkansas 23-20 (home). They also beat Tennessee at home by just 10 points and have three trouble spots in their schedule: Georgia, on Oct. 31; at South Carolina (Nov. 14); and Florida State (Nov. 28).

The 7-0 Crimson Tide have Tennessee visiting next week, followed in by LSU on Nov. 7. They close out at Auburn on November 27.

Texas moved into the #2 spot not only because of their 16-13 win over Oklahoma, but because they've already beaten the only team to beat them last season, Texas Tech (34-24). Their other 4 wins have been relative routs over inferior competition, although their 38-14 win over Colorado rates a plus, as the Buffs knocked off Kansas this week. The Longhorns have two tough road games in a row to finish the month. They play at Missouri on the 24th and at Oklahoma State on the 31st. Kansas visits on November 21.

The team with the best opportunity to sneak into the national championship game if two of these top three falter is not 6-0 Boise State but 7-0 Iowa. The Hawkeyes have made two big statements with wins at Penn State (21-10) and last week at Wisconsin (20-10). There are still two remaining stumbling blocks in Iowa's path toward a perfect season. Next week they travel to Michigan State, but appear capable of handling them. November 14's road trip to Ohio State now becomes huge, as the Buckeyes lost a conference game to Purdue, 26-18, as their offense continues to sputter.

Four 2-loss teams appear in the Top 25 this week, the first time any team with 2 losses has reached the Top 25 this season. Texas Tech made the grade, off their 31-10 victory over Nebraska; and three teams which lost to ranked opponents: Virginia Tech (18), after their loss to Georgia Tech; Notre Dame (21) after losing to USC; and, South Carolina, who lost at Alabama.

There is only one 1-loss team that is not in the Top 25. The Idaho Vandlas are 6-1, their only loss a 42-23 defeat at Washington. A November 14 trip to Boise State should determine the Mountain West champion.
