NCAA College Football Top 25 - Week 9
Rick Gagliano | Through games of October 31, 2009
Winning football picks will help you beat the college football spreads and win more betting on football.
--- Week 9 Notes below ---
As the college football season progresses, it appears that the cream at the top is beginning to separate from the rest of the contenders.
With 7 undefeated teams still remaining, Alabama retained its #1 position without ever stepping onto a football field. #2 Texas crushed Oklahoma State, as they so often do, 41-14, and #3 Florida shattered Georgia, 41-17, though they did not look particularly powerful in doing so. The Gator win was aided by some questionable offensive calls by the Bulldogs, the pulling of QB Joe Cox prematurely, which led to an easy 5-yard INT return by Brandon Spikes, and three interceptions thrown by Georgia QB Cox.
The Gators only outgained Georgia by 88 yards and were aided by 9 Bulldog penalties for 87 yards. At this point, the Gators appear ripe for a beating, though realistically, only South Carolina seems capable of topping Florida among the remaining teams on the schedule. Florida plays at South Carolina on November 14.
Boise State, Iowa, Cincinnati and TCU comprise the rest of the unbeatens, followed by Oregon, whose only loss was in the opening week of the season, at Boise State. The Ducks routed overrated USC, 47-20, ending the fantasy of USC's #5 BCS ranking from last week. In reality, the Trojans are a second tier team in the PAC-10. With 4 games remaining in their conference schedule, they run the risk of losing two of them.
7-1 LSU checked in at #9, and Georgia Tech, 8-1 and rolling, is the #10 team in the rankings.
As more and more teams register multiple losses, filling out the remainder of the rankings has become difficult. There are suddenly three teams with three losses each, at 22, Oklahoma (5-3), 23, South Carolina (6-3) and 24 Clemson (5-3). Arizona, at 6-2, makes its first appearance of the season in the rankings at #25.
With 7 teams - 6 of them from different conferences - still unbeaten, the choice for the BCS national championship game would appear to be a controversial one. There's a very good opportunity that at least 5 of these teams will remain undefeated, and when the BCS proudly anoints Texas and either Alabama or Florida the participants, the likes of Boise St., TCU, Cincinnati and Iowa will be shortchanged.
The BCS system, as it is based upon keeping money in the hands of the major conferences and their bowl game sponsors rather than adequately and rationally deciding the best team in the nation, is completely flawed and should be scrapped in favor of a playoff system. Naturally, with the monied interests calling the shots, fans, players and coaches get the short end of the stick, year after agonizing year.
