Thursday, September 3

7:00 pm South Carolina Gamecocks at North Carolina State Wolfpack (-5, 46) - Supposedly, the Wolfpack is on the verge of contending for the ACC title, but how does one overturn being on the wrong side of a 34-0 decision from last year's opener to these very same Gamecocks? That's easy. Take away SC's QB from last year, Chris Smelley, their leading rusher, Mike Davis, and three of their top five receivers and you end up with an offense even more challenged that last year.

NC State also returns QB Russell Wilson, three of his top four receivers and they finished last season with four straight wins before bowing to Rutgers in their bowl game, 29-23. The Wolfpack is also 7-0-1 ATS in its last 8 games, so why end the trend?

PREDICTION: Wolfpack 27 Gamecocks 17

9:00 pm Utah State Aggies at Utah Utes (-20 1/2, 52) - The Aggies hosted this game last season and lost, 58-10. It doesn't take a genius to discern that just maybe the Utes are going to do it to them again, and even worse, since they have home field advantage this season.

If you are actually able to single this game, go for it. It looks pretty solid. The Utes are projected for a BCS bowl game while the Aggies are projected to survive another season.

PREDICTION: Utes 66 Aggies 14

10:15 pm Oregon Ducks at Boise State Broncos (-4, 64) - Actually, the best game of the day, which many fans in the East will fall asleep watching. The Broncos are 19-2 in their last 21 home games, so this is a tough task for Oregon. One thing's almost for certain here: there will be no shortage of offense. Both teams were among the tops in the nation last season and both bring back their QBs: Kellen Moore for Boise and Jeremiah Masoli for the Ducks. This is a tough pick because I personally like both teams and they are perennial bowl participants. In a shoot-out, take the points, as that seems to be the most rationale approach to a game that figures to be wide-open start to finish.

PREDICTION: Ducks 44 Broncos 41

12:00 pm Navy Midshipmen at Ohio State Buckeyes (-22, 47) - Navy has a pretty good team, but the Buckeyes have a potential championship-caliber squad capable of either running up the score on the opposition or holding opposing offenses to few or no points. There are many changes in Columbus this season and QB Tyrelle Pryor will be working with a lot of new personnel, as the offense retools with 7 new starters.

Defensively, the Navy triple option attack could cause problems. The Middies led the nation in rushing last season, and will likely do so again this year with new starting QB Ricky Dobbs, who can run like the wind and also has an exceptional arm. The Navy offense won't be as predictable as it has been in the recent past with Dobbs at the controls. Additionally, the defense continues to improve and seven starters return for that unit.

The Midshipmen are probably good enough to keep the Buckeye defense on their heels, but not quite good enough to win. Take the points, however, and go under. Navy will chew up clock with their rush-first offense and cover the line.

PREDICTION: Buckeyes 23 Midshipmen 17

12:00 pm Akron Zips at Penn State Nittany Lions (-26 1/2, 58 1/2) - Penn State probably won't be putting up 38 points a game this season, but their defense may be one of the best in school history, which is saying quite a bit. QB Daryll Clark will miss his top three receivers from 2008 - all graduated - but he will have a couple of flashy running backs flanking him in Evan Royster and Stephfon Green.

The ZIps have a pretty solid offense which returns 9 starters from a year ago. Of course, the Nittany Lions are not their ordinary opponent, having won 38 of 39 games against Mid-American Conference opponents under Paterno. That's a stat that cannot be underemphasized, and under Paterno's system, Penn State has the look of a team that could run the table. The Zips haven't nearly as good a team to stay on the field long in Happy Valley. This one looks like a rout.

PREDICTION: Nittany Lions 48 Zips 10
