7:30 pm North Carolina Tar Heels at Virginia Tech Hokies (-17, 43) - The trouble with North Carolina is that they cannot maintain intensity for two halves. This is exactly what happened to them last week when they were absolutely clobbering Florida State, leading 17-6 at the half and 24-6 early in the third quarter. Then they simply quit on both sides of the ball. The offense couldn't maintain drives and the defense couldn't stop the Seminoles, who rallied to a 30-27 win. It was just about the worst lay-down of the entire season and anyone who had taken the Tar Heels should get a refund for the no-show second half.

Noting that the Heels must now head to Blacksburg to play the very game Hokies, this should be a rout. Not that the Heels are bad, it's just that they don't play as well as they should, and in the ACC, that means losing.

PREDICTION: Hokies 34 Tar Heels 10

Friday October 30, 2009

8:00 pm West Virginia Mountaineers (-3, 49) at South Florida Bulls - The Bulls have gotten more than their fair share of attention over the past few weeks. After starting out 5-0, including a win over Florida State, they played Cincinnati in a nationally televised game on the 15th of October, only to come away beaten up, and on the wrong end of a 34-17 score. Nine days later, they show up at Pittsburgh, but get rolled by the Panthers, 41-14.

This week, West Virginia visits, and they're all of a sudden 6-1 and nationally ranked. Looks like the Bulls are headed for their third straight loss. The formula is pretty straightforward: Play your standard offense, don't let freshman QB B.J. Daniels hurt you too badly and wait for him to make mistakes. He inevitably will, as freshmen do, so all the Mountaineers have to do is not turn the ball over and they should be fine.

PREDICTION: Mountaineers 27 Bulls 19

Saturday October 31, 2009

12:00 pm Cincinnati Bearcats (-17, 53) at Syracuse Orange - This is a real trap game for the 7-0 Bearcats beacuse following their trip to upstate New York, they face UConn and West Virginia in order, prior to closing out the season at Pitt on December 5, so they could be peeking past the Orangemen just a wee bit.

3-4 Syracuse actually hasn't played as badly as they were advertised for the 2009 campaign. Under new head coach Doug Marrone, they've already equalled their win total from last season, and are playing better teams. Their worst losses have been by 21 points, at Penn St. and 2 weeks ago against West Virginia, so playing at home, there is the possibility of them keeping this close, though it's doubtful.

Cincinnati is just too well-coached, with too much at stake to not take this game seriously. Finishing undefeated could actually land the Bearcats in the National Championship game, and they're on track to do just that. They have too many weapons for the Orange to contend with and the defense continues to improve every week.

PREDICTION: Bearcats 41 Orangemen 17

--- Story continues below ---

12:00 pm Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Connecticut Huskies (-7, 46) - The Huskies are still mourning the stabbing death of teammate Jasper Howard, and the incident hangs over the program like black death, but the players and coaches have shown incredible resolve and near-piety in their conduct, both on the field and off. At 4-3, the Huskies are having a solid season, and play every game until the final gun. Their three losses have come by 2, 3 and 4 points, so there's every reason to believe this will be a close game.

Rutgers won't exactly lie down here. After being pounded by Cincinnati in the season opener, 47-15, they've re-dedicated themselves and have gone 5-1 since, their only loss by 7 to a very good Pitt squad. UConn may win the game, but Rutgers will hang tough. They are both good football teams.

PREDICTION: Huskies 20 Scarlet Knights 17

12:00 pm Purdue Boilermakers at Wisconsin Badgers (-6 1/2, 54 1/2) - After the Boilermakers knocked off Ohio State, 26-18, they didn't let down the following week, beating Illinois, 24-14. Now, the Boilermakers have to go on the road, where the Illini have won two of the past 5 meetings, though Wisconsin has won the last three outright. The line is overall a little light, and the way the Badgers play at home, they should hand the Boilermakers their 6th loss of the season.

Purdue is this season's schizophrenic. One never knows which team will show up for the game, though it's a pretty safe bet that they'll score at least 21 points and give up even more.

PREDICTION: Badgers 31 Boilermakers 24

1:00 pm Southern Miss Golden Eagles at Houston Cougars (-7, 63) - While the Cougars have been getting all the accolades (they should, they beat some quality teams), the Golden Eagles seek respect, something they've apparently received from the oddsmakers, being only 7 point underdogs to the ranked and mighty Houston squad.

Both teams possess plenty of offense, though Southern Miss. is missing some elements on defense, which is what actually makes the Cougars the higher quality team.

PREDICTION: Cougars 41 Golden Eagles 24
