Fearless Rick's NFL Preseason Week 2 Picks - Early Games

Rick Gagliano | August 20-24

Fearless Rick was 11-4-2 Last week, including the Hall of Fame game. Off to a spectacular start. Check out his BEST BETS on NFL preseason and make some dough.

Thursday, August 20

7:30 pm Cincinnati Bengals at New England Patriots (-6 1/2, 36 1/2) - OK, NEW ENGLAND IS GREAT. However, the Bengals still have much to accomplish in the preseason, including getting the combo of Carson Plamer to Chad Ochocinco working, and that should occur within minutes of the opening snap. Don't believe for a moment that the Bengals are just going to roll over here. If anything, the hungry players trying to make the squad will be all out in the second half. Since Tom Brady already played a full half last week, expect him to do the same here, and possibly more. Now, the real money will go down on New England in the first half, probably a line of 4 1/2, and that may cover, but the angle is that the Pats relax late and the Bengals keep it close, with a chance to win at the end.

PREDICTION: Bengals 30 Patriots 27

8:00 pm Philadelphia Eagles (-3, 36 1/2) at Indianapolis Colts - This should be a fun game to watch because both teams are going to be in the running for playoff spots all season, and, with the addition of Michael Vick to the Eagles, they have become the choice to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. This could be a preview of that game, but many of the names here on Thursday will be different than ones playing in the regular season because both coaches will be leaving a handful of starters at home for various reasons, including injuries.

Vick will be one of those players who doesn't make it even to the sidelines, as is coach Reid's policy. Donovan McNabb, and a bunch of starters are going to play a full half, so the Colts have already responded by announcing that the offensive starters would get at least 20 plays as a unit. That would be maybe a little more than a quarter, so the Colts would seem short-shrifted here.

Both squads are coming off losses, and the key is how well Indy does against Philly's solid secondary. Another question is how well Philly has practiced with all the media hoopla over the Vick signing. It's probably a safe bet that some players were distracted and won't perform well. Noting that, go out on a limb and take the home underdog Colts to come away with a second string, second half win. That's right. Take both dogs Thursday.

PREDICTION: Colts 24 Eagles 20

Friday, August 21

8:00 pm Tennessee Titans at Dallas Cowboys (-3, 38 1/2) - Well, who would have expected that the mighty Cowboys would be bested by the lowly - but enormously talented - Oakland Raiders last week? We did! Now, the question becomes, will the Cowboys rebound from their poor showing against the 2-0 Titans?

This is, after all, the first nationwide look at the new Cowboy stadium and the 'Pokes wouldn't want to disappoint owner Jerry Jones and the fans with a loss. Trouble is, as long as Kerry Collins keeps tossing interceptions - two last week against the Bucs - Vince Young will get hungrier and hungrier for another taste of the starting job. Tennessee hasn't been exactly overwhelming on defense, though tonight that may change. Romo will get to play most of the first half, but the Cowboys offense lacks spark.

Any way you slice it, the Cowboys are up against it and will have to prove themselves every week, even in the preseason. Meanwhile, the take-no-prisoners Titans, who haven't lost a preseason game since August 11, 2007 (10 straight wins) are flexing their muscles.

PREDICTION: Titans 24 Cowboys 14

8:00 pm Kansas City Chiefs at Minnesota Vikings (-2 1/2, 37) - Brett Favre wanted to play Friday, so here's his shot, against one of the worst defenses in football. Kansas City couldn't defend a pass if it were thrown into the locker room. So, why is the line only 2 1/2? Rust. On Favre's arm.

He'll score at least once, then the other two guys behind him, who thought they were fighting for the starting job, will get their shots. It's going to be a long night in the KC secondary, and that's even without Adrian Peterson running over, under, around and through the defense.

PREDICTION: Vikings 27 Chiefs 6

8:00 pm Atlanta Falcons (-2 1/2, 36) at St. Louis Rams - The Rams are a team built more for the USX League than the NFL, but they still have a franchise in St. Louis, so they must play on. The interesting aspect of this game is how many snaps Matt Ryan and running back Michael Turner take.

After last week's embarrassing loss to Detroit (nobody likes losing to the Lions, even in preseason), one can rest assured that Ryan and Turner will get more touches. If Turner gets 8 carries and Ryan throwns any more than 12 passes, this one could be a laugher by the half. The other side of the equation is how well the Atlanta defense plays. That's a unit that needs to improve if the Falcons are going to do anything in the playoffs. Lots of players being evaluated, so expect some hitting and some missing.

PREDICTION: Falcons 23 Rams 17
