Atlanta at San Francisco (-2 1/2, 41), 4:05 pm - Wow! A game actually worth watching! San Francisco has been nothing short of astonishing in their quick turnaround from last season's 3-8 start. Since Mike Singletary took over as head coach, they have gone 7-3, and looked good doing it. They are probably the hardest-hitting bunch in the NFL, on both sides of the ball, and their newfound determination and poise is a testament to solid coaching. Their only loss of the season was to Minnesota, and they were close enough in that one, losing 27-24, to cover the spread, so they are a perfect 4-0 ATS. Last week's 35-0 romp of the Rams has to have Atlanta thinking max protection for Matt Ryan and extra hard blocking on running plays.

The Falcons are not going to back down here, and there are a couple of caveats for the 'Niners going into this contest: Michael Crabtree finally signed on and is attending practice, but he's unlikely to see much more than limited action, and running back Frank Gore is still out with an ankle injury. That really gives Atlanta the upper hand and they need a win to keep pressure on the 4-0 Saints. The Falcons are 2-1 and coming off a bye week, so they should be well prepped for this one.

PREDICTION: Falcons 23 49ers 17

Houston at Arizona (-5 1/2, 49 1/2), 4:15 pm - Both defenses might as well just play with ten men, or twelve, as it won't make much difference here. Two of the most potent offensive units will be on display in a controlled environment, which means the score could approach stratospheric heights. As unbelievable as it may seem, the Texans, at 2-2, have a better record. Arizona, thanks to being a Super Bowl participant last season, has a tougher schedule than they bargained for, thus their 1-2 record out of the gate. Having last week off should have been halpful to the Cardinals, especially after that 31-10 beat-down by the Colts on Sunday night.

The scoring will be fast and furious, and the Cardinals are no lock to cover this one, but the feeling is that they're the better team and may take advantage of home field and some short fields by creating turnovers. Look for Kurt Warner and his trio of receivers to have a field day against a very suspect Texas secondary.

PREDICTION: Cardinals 44 Texans 35

New England (-3 1/2, 41) at Denver, 4:15 pm - OK, the Broncos proved they could beat a quality team, dropping Dallas last week, but the question remains whether they can beat a team that actually has all the parts working. Dallas, the ultimate underperformers, weren't a good litmus test for the Broncos, but the Patriots will make them prove themselves in a very big way. Coming off a beating of the Ravens, in a game in which just about everyone who handicaps football took Baltimore (except me), New England is poised for a run of five or six straight wins up to and after their bye week November 1.

The Broncos will put up one heck of a fight thanks to the additions on defense, especially that of Brian Dawkins, who has brought menatl and physical toughness to this team. The big difference is on offense, where the Patriots can excel and Denver must be careful to not turn the ball over in critical situations. They've been very good in controlling the clock and managing games, but that is also where New England does its best work. The Broncos will hang in, but the Patriots have the look of an offense about to explode.

PREDICTION: Patriots 31 Broncos 21

Jacksonville at Seattle (-1 1/2, 44), 4:15 pm - Seattle QB Matt Hasselbeck returns to action after missing two games with rib issues. That's a major plus for the Seahawks, who have dropped three straight after opening the season with a shutout of the inept St. Louis Rams. While having their regular QB back running the offense is a good thing for Seattle, the Jags seem to already have everything going well offensively, after putting up 37 points against the struggling Titans. QB David Garrard threw 3 TD passes and rushed for 38 yards in the game, as the Jaguars scored more than 30 points for the second straight game and evened their record at 2-2. Jacksonville has plenty of momentum and may dominate time of possession if Maurice Jones-Drew gets untracked in the running game. Look for MJD to get 20 or more touches and the Jags play keep-away for their thrid straight win.

PREDICTION: Jaguars 23 Seahawks 16

Indianapolis (-4, 46) at Tennessee, 8:20 pm - After starting off the 2010 campaign 10-0, the Titans this year are in danger of dropping their fifth straight without a win and there may be no tougher opponent this season than these Colts, who own the league's longest current winning streak at 13 in a row. If you think I'm going to take a stand against 4-0 Indy, with 0-4 Tennessee, you really don't know me. The Titans may be wishing they hadn't traded away Albert Haynesworth, but after this one, they will probably wish they never heard of one Peyton Manning, who is off to a record-setting start to his season (on pace to throw for 5344 yards).

PREDICTION: Colts 31 Titans 14

Monday, Oct. 12

NY Jets (-2, 36) at Miami, 8:30 pm - After last week's flop in New Orleans, the Jets are forced to make another trip to the deepest part of the South, where it may be very hot and humid and a detriment to defensive players. The Jets are a rough and tumble bunch, as are the Miami players, so this could easily evolve into a hard knuckle brawl. The teams know each other well, considering that they face one another twice every year, so a close call is expected.

The Jets won in Miami last season, but that was with Favre at QB, and Miami dusted them 24-17 last year, denying them a playoff spot. Revenge for that game may be on the minds of some Jets players, but as it has been proven over and over again, won't play into the final outcome. Miami badly needs a win, and after showing the Bills their wildcat offense over and over and over last week, expect them to run the Jets into submission. If you want to talk ugly, it won't get much nastier than this game.

PREDICTION: Dolphins 17 Jets 13
