Sunday, Oct. 25

(Byes: Baltimore, Denver, Detroit, Jacksonville, Seattle, Tennessee)

Green Bay (-9, 41 1/2) at Cleveland, 1:00 pm - This is only Cleveland's thrid home game, but they've already lost their first two appearances in front of the home twon fans. At 1-5, the Browns' season is already pretty much over, so the players will be loose with nothing to lose. The Packers, meanwhile, have to keep winning every chance they get, lest the Vikings pull further away from the NCF North pack. The Vikes already have a 2 1/2 game lead in the division, including a win over the Packers.

Without a doubt, the Packers have a superior team in this match-up, and the Browns can't be very encouraged after the Packers pitched a 26-0 shutout against the Lions last week. This game just looks too easy for Green Bay, so take the Packers to win big again.

PREDICTION: Packers 27 Cleveland 10

San Francisco at Houston (-3, 44), 1:00 pm - The Texans stunned Cincy last week and are feeling good about their offense, plus the defense put forth an improved effort against the Bengals. At 3-3, the home fans will be looking for a strong effort. As for the 49ers, after pounding an inferior Rams team, they went out and bombed in a 45-10 home loss to Atlanta. The game should have served as a reality check and the bye last week offered the players and coaches an opportunity to re-focus.

Both teams have strong motivating factors, but the game is further confused by Houston being just 1-2 at home and San Fran, 1-1. In what should be a close, well-played game on both sides, the 49ers look more like the team on the rise here and the points may actually help.

PREDICTION: 49ers 23 Texans 20

San Diego (-5 1/2, 44) at Kansas City, 1:00 pm - Well, here we go with the Chargers again, losing games they're supposed to win, how talented they are, how they should be a playoff contender. Let's face it. Over the past three seasons, the Chargers just haven't been up to the task. Maybe the bar was set too high, but riding on San Diego's hype has been a losing proposition. I actually don't care if they make the playoffs or not, since they are chronic complainers and underachievers.

The Chiefs aren't world beaters, but they won on the road last week and nearly upset Dallas the week before, so they're worth a shot against a division rival to whom they lost both of last season's game by one point each. That's right. One point. So, why isn't the line San Diego -1. Because people don't bother to check, that's why. Chiefs rock here.

PREDICTION: Chiefs 30 Chargers 24

Minnesota at Pittsburgh (-5, 45), 1:00 pm - Until Minnesota loses, they're a pretty good deal, though they didn't cover last week at home against Baltimore. Grett Favre has been fabulous, but sooner or later, everyone throws in a clunker. More often than not, a QB will have a bad day because of weather conditions and/or a solid defense. Up until now, the Vikings have been winning under ideal playing conditions, beating their three best opponents, San Francisco, Green Bay and Baltimore inside the Metrodome. Their three road wins were at Cleveland, St. Louis and Detroit, two of those games being played in domes. Of course, Favre played many seasons in Green Bay, so a fall afternoon in Pittsburgh isn't likely to cause him any grief, but a Pittsburgh defense ranked #3 in the league for yards allowed (275.2) might have something to do with the final score in this contest.

Even the best teams don't win or cover every week. The Steelers giving 5 at home is plenty of juice, a tough hill to climb.

PREDICTION: Steelers 27 Vikings 20

Indianapolis (-14, 45) at St. Louis, 1:00 pm - Please, this just isn't fair. The Colts, well, you should know the story. They're an offensive machine. In a dome. Huge win.

PREDICTION: Colts 45 Rams 13

New England (-15, 45) vs. Tampa Bay at London, 1:00 pm - As though 0-6 Tampa Bay needed any more distractions, the team has to travel to London. Worse yet, they get to play the merciless New England Patriots, who have the look again of a team not taking any prisoners. After smashing the Titans 59-0 in the snow, one can only suppose that the Brits get a chance to look at one of our best teams.

Who scheduled this, anyhow? Our British friends deserve to see two good teams, not one. This ought to be an absolute rout. Cheeri-o!

PREDICTION: Patriots 38 Buccaneers 10
